Smoke?

Quick question.
I've noticed that my gas milage as of late has been decreasing..
The other thing is that if I ever need to floor it to pass a vehicle or something I get a lot of smoke out of the exhaust.
Any ideas?
Has about 5700 miles on it, changed the oil back at 4k.
Seems to happen wether I get good/bad diesel (usually get fuel at the same place since I bought it with 300 miles on it)

Thanks in advance!

Re: Smoke?

Fairly new to diesels myself, but I think your mileage drop might stem from a winter blend of diesel. I have read on this site that the winter blend will kill your mileage. I don't know what you usually see, but my 4x4 X gets about 14mpg average.

As for the smoke, I get it too. Black smoke= Okay. White smoke= Not Okay. One of the old hands here will pick up where I left off.

Re: Smoke?

Jason,

You probably got a tank full of some cold-weather blend now that it's dropping down into the freezing temps in MN. I frequent the same stations a lot and was just up in North Dakota over the weekend and have still be able to get straight diesel #2. My mileage has been staying consistent at 16mpg but will drop into the 14's during the winter while running the winter blends of diesel fuel.

As for smoke...

Blue smoke on a cold morning is normal. Black smoke on acceleration is normal (particularly if you have a chip, mine smokes like an SOB when it's floored). The black smoke means not enough air in the mixture between fuel and air. Again, completely normal.

My X is going to roll over 40k miles next week sometime and the mileage has been improving with its age. Don't get discouraged if your mileage drops during the colder weather!

Re: Smoke?

Have you changed the fuel filter?? I'd try that.

I change mine just about every 2 oil changes or I have performance and mileage issues.

Re: Smoke?

When I start seeing a lot of smoke it is time
to clean the air filter. I have the Western
diesel foam filter and it only take a few min to
clean and reoil it. I have to do this every 10
to 15 k miles. The fuel filter gets changed
every third oil change.
