I recently had to take both the X and the CC down a woods road that was unplowed and had steep slopes and hard turns around trees. The X had vastly superior traction and handling than the CC. The CC kept wanting to run off the road, chattered and bucked in the deep snow and generally wanted to wallow. In contrast, the X was precise and nimble and never chattered or wandered. In all fairness, if I had added 1500 lbs in the back of the CC it may have done better. Nevertheless the X performed flawlessly without any added weight or other adjustments.
I won't post this one over on the general board as I might start WW III.
I agree, we've had snow since Thanksgiving. Drove through 18 inches on a Christmas tree farm Thanksgiving weedend, up hills without problem. Snow has piled up since then. Handles Northern Michigan winter just fine.
Standing starts on snow/ice packed roads with no wheel spin in 4 HI. Would make an excellent plow vehicle.
My 2wd with limited slip handles great in the snow. With the first snows in December, I was a little apprehensive about how it would handle, particularly without added weight in the back like my previous truck. No extra weight is needed in the X!
I read somewhere that the weight distribution is something like 49/51, front to rear. This is probably the reason that the X handles better than a truck in the snow, 2 OR 4wd!

Our Firefighter buddy 3992824 makes a good point about how well the X does even in 4x2 mode. There's quite a few times I've not engaged 4x4 because it was doing so well in 4x2. I used to engage my other 4 wheel drive vehicles much sooner.
Yep,the Excursion is the best vehicle I have had in deep snow.I also have a 1997 ZR2 4x4 S-10 pickup , but it can't compare to the X.The are saying we might get a huge snowstorm sunday lasting until tuesday here in central New Jersey.
I do a lot of traveling in the winter pulling a 4 place covered snowmobile trailer. It weighs about 4,000 lb.
On snow covered roads, I find I use 4x4 much LESS than with my previous 4x4 Suburbans 82,84,87,93. Even in 4x2, the front tires seem to cut through the ridges left between lanes by other traffic and snowplows very well. I'm sure the extra weight on them helps.
