Sound Deadening?

Just read a post on this in the upgrades and aftermarket forum and it got me wondering if anyone has installed a sound deadening material (dynamat etc...) to the interior of the X? It would be alot of area to cover! Anyestimates for costs? Anybody have experience pulling down our humongeous headliners? Would love to quite things down a bit more, but I am not sure about the feasibility given the size of the X. Maybe a cheaper solution would be a stereo upgrade .

Re: Sound Deadening?

The headliner takes a little work to drop down as the overhead console has to come down and the interior side plastic body parts have to drop inwards to expose the outer edges of the headliner.
Don't know what I want to use above the headliner but sure want to keep the cost down.

I have a medium roll of the home carpet padding,is that worth while of laying under the factory carpet for sound absorption?

A week ago I had the Excursion for the day and just for grins I laid a single layer of it on top of the Excursion carpet from the second row to the back doors, the wife asked what I did to the truck as it seemed different,I showed her and asked if I'm going to do the rest of the floor

Re: Sound Deadening?

I puty Husky mats front, middle and rear on my X, and it seems to help with the sound. It's only money, no work involved.

Re: Sound Deadening?

Wow, I can't see making my X quieter on the inside.... Compared to my old 96 F-350 Power Stroke, it is one quiet towing vehicle. Sometimes, while sitting at a stop light, I have to roll the window down to check to see if she is still running. Of course I am an old guy who probably spent too many years on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier....

Re: Sound Deadening?

When we picked up our '02 I didn't expect it to be as to be so much more quiet than the 99.5 F250

I installed some extra firewall sound deadening material last weekend, what a difference that made

Re: Sound Deadening?

It may sound silly to some but I decided to use some of the thick carpet padding I had mentioned I had left over from a carpet install, both driver and passenger sides of the firewall was done.

The padding was paid for and I wasn't going to shell out the bucks for brown bread when I have materials of similar properties.

Well the time it took to install the padding was well worth it,the wife even asked if I had done something to the truck the past weekend as all she can hear now is the Wicked Wheel's whistle

Re: Sound Deadening?

When you say the firewall, do you mean that you just added more insulation to the removable factory sound deadening panels under the dash?

Re: Sound Deadening?

I should have said the interior side of the firewall.

The Excursions with the power pedal assembly(like on ours) did not come with the drivers side sound panel, only the passengers side.

I installed the padding directly on the firewall,if I get the time this weekend I may do the center most part of the firewall behind the dash.

Re: Sound Deadening?

Is this just a matter a shoving a sheet of sound deading material up there and securing it, or is there a lot of panel/wiring removal/moving involved?

Thanks

Re: Sound Deadening?

For the driver's side it was a piece of cake as there wasn't anything in the way to set the padding against the wall.

I just used a couple pieces of aluminum tape to secure the top most parts.

GREAT! I can do that easily. My ankle is sprained/broke and I am going out of my mind trying to take it easy!
