Spare Key / Programming Help

Howdy y'all!

Got a quick question for your X gurus out there:

I've got a '01 X Limited 4x4 PSD, and of course it has the anti-theft key system. I bought a spare key from the dealer, had them cut it, got the manual out and followed the key programming instructions, didn't work...re-read the instructions, did it again...theft light flashes...no-go...re-read and tried it over and over and over again to no avail. Calling the dealer right now, possible for the key to be defective or is it the operator?

Appreciate any input/help. Thanks!

Re: Spare Key / Programming Help

Say hey Brad and welcome to the forum!!!

I f you did not pay around $60.oo for the key it will only unlock the doors. It does not have the programable chip in it . Yeah I know that is a bummer. Makes these typy keys good for when you lock your keys in the tank. Looking down at the top of the key if you can see an ouline opposite the oval where the split ring goes so you can put it on a key fob or ring or chain . This is where the chip is. I do not know if the keys that do not have the chip have that outline. When I had my alarm system installed he had to take the chip out and do some programing to the PATS. That is how come this dummy knows where it is at .

Good luck and take care.

Re: Spare Key / Programming Help

I paid around $20 Just for the key. The dealer would have programed it for an extra $35. I programed it myself and the programming was tricky to say the least.

The timing is very criticial. I found I was taking too long on some of the steps. It took me about 4 tries to get it to work.

Re: Spare Key / Programming Help

I have almost same vehicle. BTW look at my jeep specs below. Anyway, my spare key worked okay using manual procedure. However I think the dealer used some information from truck build info or original key to select the proper P.A.T.S. Key. If this is the case then they need to select the correct key.

Re: Spare Key / Programming Help

The key cost $24 plus tax at the Ford dealer.
Followed the directions in the manual, it worked on the second try. I was a little slow on one step the first try. One needs the two original keys to program a third.

Ray, glad to see another Jeeper on the board!!
I remember giving the parts guy some vehicle info (this was a few weeks ago), and he also made a direct copy of the original key (and I have a 2nd key too). When I try programming it, the spare key (it is a PATS key too) will not start the engine, it will crank, but not start, and the THEFT light flashes. I called the parts guy yesterday, he transfered me to the service department, all I got was a voice mail...don't you love it?

Oh well!! I'll give them another ring...this time to the service manager...

Re: Spare Key / Programming Help

That's what I ran in to. I was doing it too slow. The last time I did it faster and like you it worked.

Re: Spare Key / Programming Help

I talked to one of the service guys yesterday, he offered to program the key for me whenever it would be convenient for me to bring it up there, right there on the spot, and no charge either....I didn't have a chance to do it yesterday as I had the Jeep/Trailer on back. After work yesterday I thought I would try to reprogram it again...just for grins, ya know

First and second tries were unsuccessful...3rd time I did it like a madman...voila!!

It worked!! Yahoo!

Thanks for all the help!
