This is what I plan on making here soon. I will be mounting a 35" tire on it and maybe a hi-lift jack behind it. What do you guys think? Comments and suggestions VERY welcomed!!!
I found several kits that will make up the wheel mount, latch and spindle. I am gonna try and brace the left side under the bumper cover to the main bumper support so when I open it fully it won't sag so much.
I snagged the picture off of ebay, didn't have a pic of mine from behind.
should be nice... I plan on doing the same.. hopefully give some more room in the back for storage.. I want to make a different interoir panel that doesn't have the spare tire cut out too.i will be making plate steel front and rear bumpers.. take some pictures of how you build yours.. have you seen Cross Enterprises version.. ? Blank
EMS Offroad has a decent universal tire carrier kit too.. Tire Carrier : EMS Offroad, Custom 4x4 Fabrications
Thanks,
Deo

I like the idea as well. But, opening the rear becomes that much more work. Three doors is bad enough. Decisions.....

I want to make a pivoting or tilt down tire carrier ie you could lower the tire down to the ground and unbolt it on the ground.. and same with reloading it..i may mount a small boat winch to lift it..plus that way my wife could change the tire if needed.. because she isn't gonna be able to lift a 285/75/ 16 spare out of the back of the truck and or take one off a spare carrier either.. something to think about..I could do it, obivously... but if your spouse drives the truck ..thats something to think about..even picking up the flat tire and rim and putting it into the back of the truck would be a huge struggle for a small woman..so I hope my idea works.. I will post pictures when I do it..probably this summer though. I plan on one board air system too so a impact would be available too..should be sweet
thanks,
Deo

Done.....almost. It still needs paint and a hi-lift jack mount and it will be done. I wanted to drive with it and use it before I paint it so I could modify it. I didn't get any progress pictures but it was pretty straight forward. The only thing I would not do again would be the receiver hitch. I purchased one from Harbor Freight and the 2x2 that fits in the vehicle receiver had tooooooo much play in it. I had already built around it so when I cut that piece off and added the same 2x2 that I built the unit from it fit much better. I would just weld a receiver tube underneath a piece of 2x2 and built around it. This is going to work but it would look much better the other way.
Please don't laugh to hard when you look at the pictures, this was a rough draft but serves it purpose and with paint I think it would look much better.
In the first picture you can't really see it but the driver side tail light is completly visable if you are directly behind me.
I had the 2x2 already so that didn't cost me anything.
The receiver tube extension was about $20.00 (use weld on next time)
Latch from MSC direct $53.47 shipped. 2,000 lbs. claping force
Hinge was a 3 point 1 1/8 hitch pin from Tractor Supply $3.94
Just a little cheaper than one that you could buy online
Wow, excpet for the tire carrier your truck looks like mine. I even have the rack! Very cool. Does it rattle?

Which rack do you have? The tire carrier doesn't rattle at all, the tire is too heavy. Can you send pics of your truck? Where did you have your drive shaft made, I have always wanted to upgrade mine there is a small vibration on take off and under heavy acceleration. The ladder bars took care of most of it but not all.
I have the 6" wilderness rack with a custom wind jammer to eliminate noise. I will try to take pictures someday. Of course my truck is all scratched up from off roading. I had my drive shaft made at Tom Woods
This is actually my second. I thought I had a problem with the first one but didn't. Anyway I now have two. Too bad your not close by. I would loan it to you.
It would be really cool if you could figure a way to mount the tire on the left barn door.

I think you did a fine job given you are using the hitch. It is somewhat what I have planed but instead I am going to have the pivot hing welded to the actual bumper (aftermarket bumper like a IronBull etc..) That way its solid for sure and allows full weight use of the hitch. I like your as opposed to buying the one that is similar. I always prefer built to buy and you saved money as well. Now I know were to get the various parts from, thanks
Weather has been pretty nasty the past month or so since I finished. I also found some problems with it, mainly that it collects water in the tube that the swing mounts to. It is getting in the area where it pivots on the other side of the nut. What I will end up doing is drilling a hole by the nut somewhere to drain it and fill it with expanding foam to seal the entire tube. It also kind of sags while open so I will try and attach it to the factory bumper somehow. If you take the tan cover off there is a hole in the factory bumper and behind that is the main support for the bumper. It looks pretty solid and I was thinking of welding a tab on the bottome and at the end of the carrier and somehow bolt it to that pivot point under the bumper. I will post when it is complete.
