Starting Problem

I recently purchased an 05 Ford Excursion with the 6.0 Diesel and have only a 1000 miles on it. This is our first diesel and so far we love it. Last night we pulled into the truck stop to purchase some fuel and after we filled up we tried to start the engine and it would start. It tried to start just like it always does but it almost sounded like it was not getting any fuel. After about an hour of waiting and the tow truck showing up we tried to start it one last time and it fired up just like normal. We have driven it several times since last night and it starts fine now. Being this is our first diesel I was just wondering if I may had done something wrong while fueling up or if this was just a strange occurence. I placed a call to the dealer and they did not have any diesel reps in the shop this morning and I was hoping that I could find a possible answer from the guys that drive diesels all the time.

I know this is a vague question, but hoping to find someone that may know what happened and see if it is something that we need to worry about.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Re: Starting Problem

The only thing I can think of is that you may have gotten air into the fuel system. This could happen if you ran out of fuel or ran it real low on fuel and the pickup within the tank was not installed properly and it let air into the lines.

Re: Starting Problem

I really would have thought the same thing, but the tank was between a quarter and half a tank. I put 31 gallons in the tank so there should have been about 13 gallons left in the tank. I did speak with a person at dinner about it and he said that when I pulled it to fill up that for some reason all of the remaining fuel was in the wrong part of the tank and got some air in the lines.

I am going to call the dealer on Monday to see if I can get an answer from their mechanics. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Starting Problem

I don't thik I would buy into that one.

About a month or two ago I towed about a 6k load over in to TN and was wanting to get fuel when I got into TN as it is less than here in NC well I went a bit to far when I pulled into the station it was very full I I could not find the one deisel pump in the middle of the gas pumps just to many cars and trucks in the way and I had 24' of trailer behind me.

Any way it started bucking and then stalled, started right back up moved the truck around again did it again may have stopped, stalled 3 or 4 times before I got to the pump. Filled up and drove away no problems.

Also learned that E on the 05 does not mean 2.5 gallons to go (like the 02) it is EMPTY! well not empty as it only took 42.5 gallons I had put over 44 in the 02 several times and never ran out or stalled at the pumps so somthing has changed. But then I did have the intank mods done on the 02 and I KNOW the pickup was on the bottom from the factory.

Stalling and or not starting is not normal for these so I would seek help and try to get an answer. But I do know that is difficult when it "runs per spec" every time you take it to the dealer.

I am about to start one like that myself I get a missshift about every 100 to 200 miles. But that is fairly often for me as I have almost 10K on the 05 I picked up June 27th.
