Station wagon effect?

I have noticed on the rear doors of my X a black dust. Is this diesel soot? And if so, when you run with the rear panel windows opened wouldn't it be sucked back into the vehicle?

Re: Station wagon effect?

If you are trying to find a flaw in this design, you should consider that all vehicles create a vacuum behind them when they are in forward motion. This was always an issue with full size Broncos because the windows was able to be rolled down with the tailgate up. Dual exhaust straight out the back would result in exhaust fumes getting sucked into the cab of the vehicle.

The black residue is a combination of all the crap you drive over being sucked back towards the vehicle. I have not noticed this problem on my Excursion at all, perhaps you are leaking fluid somewhere and it is attracting additional dust. I found this happened a lot with my Bronco, particularly when it leaked tranny fluid like a siv. The fluid would end up getting on the tailgate and any dust would be attracted to it creating a nice coating of grime on the tailgate.

Re: Station wagon effect?

JMB3 - haven't found any soot on my Beast yet. I've had a few Dodge Cummins pickups that did get sooty though.

I get the same dust and crud on the back of my X. But, I've had the same with all SUVs and trucks I've owned. I could put a deflector on the tail end but I've only got about 2" of clearance to get into my garage now. I'm also going to put 285 or 305 tires on the Beast next year and I figure that'll put me an inch higher.

My guess is that it is Diesel soot. I also get it on the back of my Excursion, but mostly on the top of the rear bumper, not alot on the back doors though.

My wife and I once watched a young lady wearing white pants sit up against the back door on the rear bumper while re-tying her shoes. When she walked away as we approached, we noticed she had black stuff all over her rear end and black stuff smudged on the back of her thighs. She had no idea what had just happened, not even a clue. We then wondered if her car had light colored seats. Poor girl

Re: Station wagon effect?

I have not noticed any soot since having the rear air deflector installed. I didn't lose any roof clearance because the rear air deflector does not extend up past the level of the roof rack. If you didn't remove the roof rack, and it clears your garage, a properly installed rear air deflector should also clear. Hope this helps. God bless!

Re: Station wagon effect?

Hi gadkins: Which rear air deflector did you install? Do you have a link to a picture and where you can buy one?

Re: Station wagon effect?

I purchased a Ford rear air deflector, installed by Ford, painted to match.
