Steeltex Campaign Replacements - which is recommended

How are the "replacement" tires offered in the recall performing for everyone?

I don't really want another set of Steeltex ATs on my vehicle, but I have heard not-so-good things about both the Pirelli and the BFG replacements offered.

None of the local Bridge/Firestone dealers will talk a reasonable deal on Revos (most won't talk, one said $100/tire), so that's out of the question. Even spoke to a local FoMoCo dealer who also sells Michelin and they can't do anything for me there either.

I figured I'd get a few more miles out of the "free" tires on there now by waiting until the end of the campaign to get replacements - big mistake!

On edit: I'm asking about one of the tires (BFG, Pirelli, GY, Steeltex E's) being offered as FREE replacements by Ford and/or Firestone. Obviously I would prefer Revos or Michs but it isn't in the budget.

Not sure what size the Revo's were, I'm guessing 265's? For comparison, 285's for $150 is a great deal. Revo's are awesome!

PLease don't take this the wrong way. You have a big truck, and i'd frankly be afraid of putting subpar tires on that rig. I ran the Revo's on my F150, MAJOR inprovement over the stock generals and even over the Mich Cross Terrains. I guess i'd trade your AT's in on any replacement tire and perhaps sell them or something. Once you ride on Revo's you won't go back. Trust me.

Re: Steeltex Campaign Replacements - which is recommended

I just got the BFG's put on a couple weeks ago. Nice ride and definatly quieter than the Steeltex, but in all fairness I had the Steeltex aired to max press. I havent towed yet with the BFG, but so far so good.

Re: Steeltex Campaign Replacements - which is recommended

I'm running the pirelli scorpion AT's and I've got no complaints . .even had them down in the mud last weekend and they seemed to clean out pretty well. The firestones were a bit more aggressive, but the pirelli's are quieter/smoother going down the road.

Have a good one,
Dave

Re: Steeltex Campaign Replacements - which is recommended

I've always been a "Michelin man". Recently my tire guy recommended Cooper HT tires. I can't tell the difference between them and the Michelin LTX. Added bonus: the Coopers are American-made
They are very quiet. They seem to roll well. They handle well(after a Helwig sway bar and Bilsteins). They seem to be wearing well, although I only have about 3,500 miles on them.
Note: I'm VERY, VERY picky about tires. I have never seen a BFG that was worth a crap

Re: Steeltex Campaign Replacements - which is recommended

I was in the SAME BOAT as you were...I wanted to put REVOs on the Excursion but Firestone would not play ball. In fact, the Firestone dealers have been told by corporate that THE ONLY TIRE they can replace with is Steeltex (not even those Bridgestones listed on the recall notice).

Therefore, I went to a Ford dealer and got the Pirelli Scorpion AT tires. I've been very pleasantly surprised with their performance, and they are definitely better than the OEM tires. We went on a 2,500 mile trip recently with them and they did awesome.

If you go with the "free" tires like I did, go to a Ford dealer and get one of the Pirelli models offered by the recall.

I'll be going to Prestige Ford in Garland this Tuesday to double check if it's okay my D code 265's come in off the rims and if so I'll order Pirellis,I been leaning towards those but like to hear feedback from those that have got em.

We're heading to Phoenix then to Sacramento,CA in September and want the better of offered replacements.

My Pirelli tires have 52,000 + on them. Wear is very good and for an on pavement tire they have been excellant.

Re: Steeltex Campaign Replacements - which is recommended

Can someone tell just what the problem was with the Steeltex load D tires? What is the reason for the recall? When I got notice of the recall it said the E's would not be included. The only tire I had was the spare and Firestone put load E on it. Friday going to Northern Utah I blew a rear tire load E. THe tread did not separate it was still intact but it it appears it blew on the side wall. So are these load E's any better than the D's? I need to replace one now do I get another E or do something different? The tires on my rig now still have alot of life in them.

Re: Steeltex Campaign Replacements - which is recommended

If I remember correctly it was due to the sidewall strength of the D'd are less than the E's,so to avoid near future headaches with tire blowouts Firestone offered the voluntary exchange to upgrade to E's.

Re: Steeltex Campaign Replacements - which is recommended

I stopped by our Ford dealer truck shop and they stated if the tires come in not mounted I've gotta take it to Firestone for a straight exchange for Firestone E's.

If the D load Firestones are mounted on the Excursion and drive into the truck shop they'll gladly pull the D's for the Scorpion AT E loads which they have plenty in stock.

I'm opting for the Scorpions based on feeedback, now it's just a matter of locating someone around the Dallas/N Dallas area that has a set of stock 16" wheels(Steels/Aluminums)gathering dust/taking up room I could borrow or trade to get the Firestone D's turned in
