I faxed the info to my dealer, Jim Wilson Ford of Yreka, CA. My salesman, Dean Perdue,
just called me back; he was skeptical of the story.
My own inclination is to go to Les Schwab (local northwest tire chain) and get my
tires replaced on Monday morning, and send
the bill to Ford Motor Co. headquarters.

I called the 24 hour hotline that was provided by Firestone, after the 11pm news had a story about the widening probe into the Steeltex tires. The story specifcally mentioned the Ford Excursion as being a vehicle on which the tires under suspicion are being used!!!! The idiot at firestone said that right now, I didn't have any option except to buy my own tires, and save the receipt, in case there was a recall. He suggested that I try the tires for a few months and see how it goes. I informed him that in my opinion, it doesn't take a few months to die!!!!!!! Ironically, I'm supposed to go pick up my new SD tomorrow. Somehow, I don't feel like owning 10 of these tires right now.......think I'll await the outcome, unless the selling dealer wants to get involved!!!!!!

Jeeze I'm feeling a little guilty...I sold all five of my tires (two thousand miles on them except spare) to a suburban owner looking for a deal at the tire shop where I was having the new 285's installed. They didn't have any deals for him so I told him to check my tires out and he was very happy to get them.
He gave me $80 a piece for them. So after that my five new 285's only cost me $300.
I wonder if Firestone will send me a check if they recall them....LOL
Bought BFG(made by Michelin) 265/75/R16 Load Range D from Costco two weeks ago (had to order them) put the Firestones with only 18K in the garage until this mess gets sorted out.
My wife and kids cannot be replaced.
BFG's are a much better ride.

Talk about stupid!!!!!!!!
I had one of my tires with cuts in it like a sunburst, took it to the dealer who said take it to Firestone. Took it To Firestone and the 18 year old know it all boss said you must have done that..There was not even a blenush on the damn thing. I asked him how it could have happened and he walked away.. Took it back to the dealer and he said i'll replace it but you may have to pay..I said BS, 36/36 , bumper to bumper, fix it and they did..
Now I am mad and think I may just sue...
I went to my Ford dealer today for a 9K service and they had not heard of the Steeltex reports. The also did not have any replacement tires for the X. I ended up at a Michelin dealer and bought 4 new 265/75 R16 Load Range E LTX's. I also kept my old Firestones. With only 9K on them someone is paying for these new tires besides me...like Horse Trucker said there are other issues here. One interesting note, with the new Michelins running 65 PSI the X feels a lot firmer and poised....
FWIW - all the Firestone 15" tire recall stories talk about the bad tires coming from the Decatur, IL tire plant. (More local stories about that tire plant in the Chicago Tribune seem to want to make a connection between the bad tire manufacture dates, and temporary labor pulled in to work the plant during a strike.)
The Steeltex tires on our Excursion say "Made in Canada." Other than the name "Firestone" on them, there would seem to be little to tie these tires to the ones that are failing so spectacularly. I'll be quite interested to see how this latest NHSTA investigation pans out...

I just saw on 60 minutes the special they had on Firestone. They had an ex-firestone engineer who said that it is not the plants, it is the tire design. They saw tires from 3 different plants shred just the same.
I am not waiting, Sat. I ordered 5 new Goodyear AT/S and they are being installed Monday. My family is worth the $700.00.

So my wife and I have been thinking it over, and I think we'd just as soon dump them as well. The BFG's seem to be pretty popular here, but I'm concerned about road noise and increased stiffness. Can anyone recommend a tire that will be close to the stock noise level & ride? Need an A/T with good snow capability, but will see some light offroad, and moderate towing use.
