steering in the Excursion...............

I have asked this before but why is there so much play in the steering...I drove my freinds F250 and it is great with no play. Anybody else have this problem. I love my X but it gets aggravating at hwy speeds........It's almost like the steering box is not meshed right with to much play in it....

Thanks in advance..

8,000 miles I wouldn't think so,maybe a trip to the dealer for them to adjust it for you under warranty?

Hope you have a good dealer by you that won't tell you it's within spec

I haven't adjusted our steering as it's okay but wouldn't hesitate to do it by the directions given

Re: steering in the Excursion...............

CHPmustang is right. And most people come away fomr the deaelr after being told that "it's within spec" becasue FOrd says it is and won't pay them to adjust it.

I've also never heard anyone that said it was anything but quick and easy to adjust themselves.

Re: steering in the Excursion...............

I complained that mine just would not track well and was fatiguing to drive. They replaced all 4 ball joints due to binding. I have not been able to drive it a lot to tell if there is much improvement due to the fact that I am now waiting for a new wiring harness to fix the stalling/quitting problem that just started at 18K.

Re: steering in the Excursion...............

Most of the wandering ailment common to Excursions is not originating at the front end of the truck. Believe it or not, the rear axle is inducing its own steering because of the X's weak leaf springs ("weak" in comparison to OEM springs on F250/350/450/550 models). Wandering occurs when you get spring-wrap in the rear leaf springs, but the wrap is uneven side to side. That allows the rear axle to get out of square with the vehicle's centerline, and rear axle steering (or you can call it a form of bumpsteer) is the result. One fellow told me he rode alongside while his wife drove their X while towing a TT, and he could actually see this happen. I installed a couple rods on mine that work similar to ladder bars (except these attach to the leaf springs and not the frame), and the wandering ceased ... completely.

(I've pasted the same comments above in at least 3 different threads, all dealing with poor on-center tracking.)

Hoowasat, Can you post up some specifics (parts used, attachment points, etc.) and pictures? I am quite interested in your fix. I think I have seen a similar set up advertised for travel trailers, but can’t remember where.

Thanks, axtinc

Re: steering in the Excursion...............

Dig around for "landyot" "radius rods". I think he frequents other forums, but google should get you close.

(edited to correct the spelling of 'landyot')

Re: steering in the Excursion...............

As I recall, the front end parts tend to be "tight" and ford has devised a complicated way to attach a torque wrench to it and then pull back and forth before telling you that it's within spec.
Also, the rear end slop really is an issue and a Hellweig anti-sway bar helps.
