Strange Electrical Issue 2003 Ex

Couple weeks back, wife noticed Ex would start but heating/AC controls would not come on. This was intermittant problem. Christmas Eve I was backing out of parking spot and Ex died. Lots of clicking, blinking lights, but acted like batteries dead. Played with switches, shifter, waited for while, and was able to start and get home. Seemed to start and run fine in the driveway that evening. Started yesterday to move to shovel snow, Ex died after few minutes. Now nothing, no lights, no clicking relays. Batteries appear to be fine. Tried to charge them but they show in fine condition. Noticed the Theft light blinking a lot during some of these problems. When I started yesterday, there was a lot of clicking noises on the relay panel. Just plain dead now, no interior lights, nothing. Suggestions for places to start looking? Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks.

Batteries would be 1st whether or not they appear charged or good. Second would be ground issues.

It is all related. I would add alternator to the list. When my alternator finally gave up, the transmission wouldn't work right, theft light was flashing, anything electronic was acting up.

Based on other posts about alternators causing all sorts of unrelated issues, I was pretty sure the alternator was the issue. The lady at NAPA was apologizing that my alternator was bad. I was glad, if my alternator wasn't bad, I was going to be totally stumped or have all sorts of repairs to make.

Check battery voLtage to be sure with a decent meter.

Should be 12.3 to 12.6 prior to starting
Right after starting about 11.4 to 11.6 while glow plugs are on.

Then should go to 13.4 to 13.8 and climb to 14.x with next to nothing on even at idle.

If you have all of this you know the alternator is good.

If you are over 12 volts and it won't start check grounds.

When my alt went bad a few weeks ago I could not get anything above about 13.4 volts and with any load it was down hill from there.

Check your ground cable to block, ill bet the cable is about to come off the motor, it was a common problem with the 03s, in fact mine almost caught fire because when the cable falls off, other smaller ground cables take 100 percent of the load and get red hot and burn off, be careful
