Strong smell of diesel after shut down

I have a short commute 12 miles and just this week I started to notice a strong smell of diesel when I get out of the rig and I even noticed a strong smell coming through the ventilation system. I have 25k miles on it now. Took it to the dealer and they recommended the $700 oil change err "30k miles service". Could this be something simple? Any ideas?

Re: Strong smell of diesel after shut down

Simple or not, at 25k you're still under warranty. Anything broken should be fixed at no cost to you, not $700. I changed my own oil at 30k and had a Valvoline instant oil change do the transmission fluid flush for $40 (I brought my own fluid). I have a stash of fuel filters, and did that myself as well.

I had several oil leaks and several fuel leaks at one point. My not-so-local dealer fixed them all in the time that they promised and under warranty. I think they put in six new o-rings to fix the fuel leaks. It does happen, so let them FIX it for you if it's happening to you.

Re: Strong smell of diesel after shut down

Climb up on top of your beast and look down behind all the linkage at the top of the block. If you can see any diesel fuel spilled there or pooled up, it is most likely coming from the filter. I had the same thing happen to me, and the smell eventualy got bad enough to where we could smell it in the cab, (of course it was when we were 1500 mi. from home), and the dealer found it was the fuel filter. Cured the problem, and haven't had any smell since. But mine started out smelling every once in a while after shut down like that. I just figured it was a diesel thing.
Hope that helps

Fixed it. It was the fuel filter. I bought a new filter and a fancy new strap wrench and then damn lid came off in my hand. Thanks for the guidence.
