Stupid auto/manual locking hub question?

I previously owned an Expedition with the auto hubs. All I did was flip the switch to 4WD when it snowed or I went off road. How does the X work with both the switch and the manual locks. I thought I've read that all I have to do is turn the switch in the truck to go into 4WD? Are the outside locking hubs insurance or protection to make sure it stays in? I really would like to know how the whole system works...I just don't!

Re: Stupid auto/manual locking hub question?

When the hubs are in the auto position they do just that the automatically lock the hubs via some sort of vaccuum technology.

The lock position bypasses that vaccuum technology and locks the hubs in place manually. Either method requires that the ESOF be switched to 4x4.

The lock position is a backup in case the vaccuum method fails. I'm kind of a new Excursion owner but that is how I understand it and to be honest I'm not sure how you know if the hubs locked or not via the automatic method.

I do know that if you switch the hubs to lock you can reach around and try to turn the universal joint and if they are indeed locked they will NOT spin.

Re: Stupid auto/manual locking hub question?

OK, making it even simpler...when it snows in a couple months do I just turn the inside switch to 4HI. Do I have to even worry about locking the hubs manually on the wheels?? What about switching to 4Low...I'm guessing I have to be stopped in P or N with foot on brake? Do I need to back up when switching out of 4Low? I just want to be educated on the proper operation of my 4X4 so I don't break anything and have to pay repairs for stupidity.

Re: Stupid auto/manual locking hub question?

As long as the hubs are in the auto position just flipping to 4HI puts you in 4x4. 4LO requires you to stop, be in neutral, break on (I think) and then switch to 4LO. Taking it out of 4LO requires you to be stopped, in neutral, and flip the switch back to 2WD

Re: Stupid auto/manual locking hub question?

It is auto 100% by flipping the switch. The locks are for serious 4 wheeling. With autos the wheels have to slip to engage, sometimes too late, the lock makes sure going in you are in 4 wheel. Make sure you turn them once a month, they will stick and you will need big pliers to move them. Otherwise the auto is nice, I use 4wlo to pull my boat out, you need to hit the brake to get it out also.

Re: Stupid auto/manual locking hub question?

If you want to really make sure the 4 wheel drive is engaged, I would lock hubs in manually. I have fixed auto feature 3 times. I will eventually switch to Warn manual hubs. The light on dash does not mean hubs are locked. Which means I usually have to get out and lock hubs to get up driveway after snowstorm or break out snowblower.

Do you have to back up a bit to disengage the hubs.I make it a habit to back 50' to disengage the hubs.Maybe I'm wasting my time.

I disagree with the slip to engage part, this system doesn't work that way (unless you have something different). I have 2HI / 4HI / 4LO. You can switch from 2HI to 4HI while moving at speeds less than 25mph. I generally leave my hubs manually locked all winter & switch to & from 4Hi at any speed. Some will say this practice is a bad idea, I say maybe.

[/ QUOTE ] Nope, backing up will generally unload the driveline & allow the hubs to unlock. It's a good idea you keep doing it.

Re: Stupid auto/manual locking hub question?

Hi,

According to the manual, that little book that came with the new X, , ,

The auto lock works when the wheels can move and allow a lock to take place. IF you are already stuck then the auto very likely will not engage so the manual allows you to go to 4x4 if you can reach the hub.

Not that I read manuals, but I was looking for pics and just happened to see that note. : ))
