When we bought the X one of the first things I thought of when I saw those rear doors is that they would make a great place to mount a sub-woofer. Has anyone done this? If so, did you build an enclosure or line it with dynamat or what?
Thanks in advance for comments or pictures!

Do a search and you'll find a member (sorry, can't remember who it is, and he's right here in the DFW area too!) who has someone that built a custom rear door enclosure.

I have done this on the driver side door. Here's what we did, more or less.
1. Remove plastic/carpet trim panel thing.
2. Measure the void you'll need in the interior-facing part of the door. You will need to cut this material away. The door is fiberglass so this is easy.
3. We then fabbed up a sheet of plywood that the sub actually bolts to. The plywood then in turn is bolted to the fiberglass door. We tried just attaching to the fiberglass but it flexed too much. This wooden panel also has a number of holes cut in it with a holesaw so the plastic trim thing will still line up with the factory fasteners. This more or less works like a champ (more on the "less" part in a bit)
4. Before buttoning everything up, line the back with Dynamat and check for clearance. When shopping for your subs, try to get one that is relatively shallow in depth. If it's too deep the magnet will rub against the back side of the door. I put a 10" JBL in mine and with the wood panel in place, I barely don't rub.
5. Re-attach trim thing. In its current configuration like this, the trim thing is going to vibrate when you use the sub and be annoying. I fixed this for the most part by...
6. Get a screw-in, clamp-down speaker grille. The kind with the four clippy things that you screw into a sub box and in so doing clamp the grille down onto the enclosure. In our case we are effectively screwing the plastic trim thing down into the wooden panel we fabricated, which goes a LONG way toward silencing annoying vibrations. Some dynamat between the plastic and wood would probably silence the thing entirely.
So far I'm happy with my simple implemtation. It makes plenty of bass for what I listen to, looks nearly factory, and didn't involve days worth of fabrication. The "subs in the cargo doors" thing is great for people like me who want some bass, but bought an Excursion because of its vast storage space. Taking up some of that space with a speaker box was something I didn't want to do.
We did snap some pictures but it's unlikely that I'll find them, as it's been about a year now since we first started working on it. If I find them I'll post them up.

Can anyone find the stealthbox online and throw in a link here? I have searched forever and I never seem to find the one for the Excursion. How much are they?
I have 2, 12" Rockford Fosgates in a box, but I am tired of it taking up the room.
The optimal cabinet for a sub is concrete (we all know that isn't practical for most applications). The doors are fiberglass and plastic. That would require some serious reinforcement, and I don't think the hinges could handle it.
You could do it, but it wouldn't be worth the $$$
I would find a sub that dosen't require much air space and build a cabinet with a quick-release connection for when you need to fill your cab with stuff.
If the cabinet that replaces the console sounds good, that would be your best bet.
i am also wanting to this. put the sub in the rear doors. i was shopping around and a few guys told me that they have put those square subs (forget the brand) in the rear doors of an X. they had to build out the doors with wood so the magnet would not rub in the back. i have seen some pics of on the net awhile ago. i will try to find it. ill post it when i do.

I would highly recommend building an enclosure if you want it to last. The rear doors on my X were just lined with dynomat and we also inserted that cotton/stuffing into the doors to give it the effect of being a larger box. After 4 years, the front panels are coming off and it's time for a re-design...definitely need an enclosure this time around.

The hinges have held up quite nicely.

Couldn't you just mount them behind the plastic door panels, without making any cut outs in the plastic? The sub's should just be for base.
TXANGLER on here was working on having more of the door panels made like he has in his X. Haven't heard of anything lately though.

There's not enough room, at least in my install there wasn't. The speaker is too "deep" and hit up against the outer wall of the door.
