Re: Sway Bar Questions

Hi Phil

As Chris stated I would do and in addition to that do another search in the 7.3L engine and drive train section. Do newer than 2 years and you will read more than you will ever want to know about the issues.

Re: Sway Bar Questions

First, thanks for the help everyone gave me. I realy appreciate it!!

Just received my Hellwig anti-sway bars. They look strong but Hellwig has some of the worst quality control when it comes to painting their products. I ordered everything from Summit Racing, they were great!! I received the parts and noticed part of the sway bar was stuck to the box, as I pulled the bar from the box the paint pulled away. On the other side of the same bar the paint was crickled. I opened up the hardware box and all the painted parts were chiped or the paint fell completely off. The other sway bar was not much better. I had Summit resend me a new set, like I said they were great. Well, same thing, the paint job was crap. I called Hellwig and they said that they are aware of this. I was told that they do not let their products fully dry before packaging them for shipping.

OK

Have any of you had this same issue??

I guess my warning to those who want this product, be prepared to repaint your sway bars when you get them or have them powder coated. This sucks!! Hopefully they will mount easy and perform as advertised. I am confident they will with the strong edorsement you guys and gals gave me. In the mean time, the Hellwig anti-sway bars look like poo and the hardware looks worse.

Maybe Hellwig is monitoring this post and will get a clue.

Oh yeah. The paint quality on the rear bar I just got is for chit. Mine didn't stick to the box though. I intend to strip it and repaint it correctly. Maybe even some blingy color

I do not think so. I called Helliwig and told them about their poor instructions, cheap hardware and painting. This was over 2-1/2 years ago. I also told them about this site and the instructions on this site were far superior to their instructions. I asked them to monitor the site. How many sway bars has Hellwing sold because of this site? Still, I have not seen a post from anyone claiming to be with Hellwing or any quality improvements. They are trying to match the factory paint on the axle. If you look at my pics of my swaybar pay attention to that beautiful paint job on the axle. Paint just fell off.

Re: Sway Bar Questions

I know no one likes to have to redo a new part but I just power paint any part I buy.

Re: Sway Bar Questions

Before the wrong big boxes arrive at my door, I want to make sure I am ordering the correct things. For an 03 4x4 X the front is a #7640 and the rear is a #7643. Correct?

Re: Sway Bar Questions

OK, since this now seems to be the active message on sway bars, let me post this over here too:

Have you guys actually measured the Hellwig front bar? Based on the other discussion that bounces around different sizes and calculations, I went and checked my rear Hellwig which is listed by them as 1.250". It measures 1.135". So I'm wondering if they list the size as a "relative" diameter based on chrome-moly stiffness rather then actual size, or maybe Hellwig changed the size between when I bought it and now.

Just an inquiry, not trying to make more out of this.

Re: Sway Bar Questions

It should be the actual size. I'd call and see if they had a change, or maybe bad info. printed.

Re: Sway Bar Questions

Those are the same part #'s I used when I ordered my Hellwig front and rear anti-sway bars from Summit Racing.

My 4x4 X is a 2002. Not sure if that matters. You can call Hellwig or go to their web site just to be sure.

I have not installed mine yet because I sent the bars and hardware to get powder coated last week. I should be receiving them back by the end of this week and installing them next week.

Good Luck!!

Re: Sway Bar Questions

Sounds like "nominal overstating" like many aftermarket parts.

Thanks for the info though since the Ford bar is 30MM (I checked it) and this is 1.18 the Ford bar may be stiffer. Like I have said prior they are very close so if you have a factory bar why not just replace it with the 30mm bar for under $50.00 and save a lot of time also over replacing the whole system with the more expensive Hellwig that is apparently no stiffer.

BTW it does not matter what is in the steel the stiffness is the same the only difference is how much it will bend and still return to the original shape.

Bruce
