Re: Tailgate Window - Warning!

Had it replaced 2hrs after it happened...

Dealership submitted it to insurance...

I still think Ford should pay for it, but that will take some time and effort to fight...

Tailgate Window - Warning!

All:

Just a warning about the tailgate window...

I was not paying attention yesterday and shut the rear doors in the wrong order.

I shut the passenger dutch door after I shut the top part of the gate. (Was carring my toolbox, in a hurry, etc...)

The result was a shattered rear tailgate window. The entire thing blew out into tiny litte pieces.

Anyone else had this happen?

Seems like an engineering defect to me...if you look at the gate, the passenger side dutch door frame just barely nicks the glass of the top of the window...seems to me this could be prevented.

Thanks for the warning - I've worried about doing that too.

Re: Tailgate Window - Warning!

Damn, i know this isnt gonna go over well, but ummm, was this the first time you closed these doors? if not, how did it go the other times you used them? why because you admittedly rush and closed them wrong, is anyone else liable? i own a boat, i ran aground on a sand bar, i know i need water under my boat, but is my boat dealer responsible because he failed to mention that? ive used it before with water under it, and all worked fine, but i was rushing because a storm was about to hit, and failed to follow the channel. let me know how you make out, maybe i should hire the attorney that you use, he must be brave. i know im gonna get creamed for saying this, but i just felt i had to, please be gentle.

Re: Tailgate Window - Warning!

VMax,

I shall be gentle, although that is not my professional demeanour.

Standard engineering practice is to "idiot proof" products so that the products are safe and do not self destruct when used by distracted or inattentive users. Closing the rear door and hatch on an X requires 3 separate operations, each of which involves several body movements and positions. Guranteed, there is a % of operations that will not be done in the correct order and guranteed that some % will result in physical damage. We are human and rather predictable in large numbers. The issue is whether Ford engineering should have predicted a high enough frequency of improper closings to have altered the design enough to have made it fail-safe.

I know I am easily distracted and inattentive and have closed the doors in the wrong order. I just make it a SOP not to slam the glass because I can't trust my self. I bet that glass is $$$.

Re: Tailgate Window - Warning!

Hey Rover, off topic but did thos procomp shocks help a lot? Do they get rid of the bump shimmies? I think I wash and polish that back glass before I break it!

Re: Tailgate Window - Warning!

Worm:

LOVE the Procomps...I drive them >50 miles every day....

Get the shocks AND the stabilizer...

I put them on at 6,000 miles...I now have 20,000...still working great...

Towed a 6,000lb trailer from Minneapolis to Moab, UT and back...tracked like a DREAM

My wife even drove some of the trip and could not believe how well behaved the X was.

One of my front shocks was shot when they took them off (at 6,000 miles!) so not only are the shocks underrated to begin with, but they tend to die an early death...

Got rid of the the shimmys, rolling and bouncing...MUCH better...

The part numbers are listed in the current Procomp catalog.

Re: Tailgate Window - Warning!

Vmax:

Give me a break!

This post was a warning to the DIRE consequences to your rear window for not paying attention (as I willingly admitted...) It was posted to inform others who did not realize this would happen!

The sandbar comparison is not valid...for too many reasons to list...the is a discussion of a design issue...somehow I don't think you could argue with the boat manufacturer that it should drive over a sand bar.

A better comparison would be to forget to push in the brake before you put the car in gear...hmmm...how did THAT one turn out for the car manufacturers (call Audi if you really need to know...)

or maybe:

How many of us would have torn the trailer towing mirrors off already if they were not breakaway?

In addition, I NEVER mentioned getting a lawyer...I stated:

"I still think Ford should pay for it, but that will take some time and effort to fight..."

That is: MY time and effort in writing and calling Ford. Please don't link me to the less savory members of our over litigious society (not the lawyers...just the sue-happy people. Are you one of them?)

Not to wish any bad luck on anyone, but I can't wait until you break your rear window next time you are in a rush and see how smug you are then...it's just a matter of time...

Re: Tailgate Window - Warning!

Rover,

Lighten up. I for one appreciate any observation that anyone on this site makes. Our motto here should be "When one learns, we all learn." You can rest assurerd that thanks to your post, I won't do the same thing. I wish that I had seen the post from the guy who banged his head on the tailgate window before I had to experience it myself. (Too soon old, too late smart.)

Re: Tailgate Window - Warning!

how about $2100 after my wife hit a tree backing up at the church. it contacted the tree atthe wiper blade and burst out and she swore she never even touched the tree untill i found an indention in the tree at the same height. i had figured a grand would cover it at least and would not have to file a claim; wrong i think the glass and frame must be all 1 part. when we first got the x i found glass in
the back compartment. and knew it was that prob. waiting to happen. so i will warn the young wife of the proper closing procedure.

Re: Tailgate Window - Warning!

brtrdws6 :

The glass can be replaces separately...that is what they did on mine.

Still not sure how much it was, and not certain I want to know...

If your wife hit the wiper, it must have also cause damage to the frame (which is fiberglass and can't be fixed...) and caused them to replace the whole thing...just a guess...
