These Bilsteins ain't what I expected.....

The UPS man just left and I'm looking at my new Bilstein shocks. Part #s BE5 6208 and BE5 6209.

The fronts mount "normally" and don't have a shock boot. They have a plastic shroud.

The rears mount "normally" and don't have a shock boot. They have a metal shroud like a Monroe shock.

The Bilsteins that I saw on an F250 mounted "upside down" and had boots on the bottom. (I only looked at the font though.)

Did I get the correct shocks? I assume I did.

I hope so, that's the same part numbers I ordered per the application chart on eshocks.com, but mine haven't arrived. I think with the Bilsteins you can buy the boots from AutoZone for like $7/pair. Hope they turn out to be as good a shock as I hear they are.

Re: These Bilsteins ain't what I expected.....

Nope. There's no place to attach a regular shock boot on the front ones. The rear shocks have that metal shroud like a Monroe so there's no way you can put a boot on it either. It looks like the boots/sleeves that are on them now will do just fine though.

Re: These Bilsteins ain't what I expected.....

Sorry, AJ'sDad, that must have been the Rancho's I was thinking about. Reply about how the ride is once you install them, if you get a chance. Thanx

Rob

Added on edit: I guess my part numbers were backwards too, what the hell was I doing that night? BE5-2818 and BE5-2819 are front and rear Bilstein #'s for the 99 4X4 SWB.

Re: These Bilsteins ain't what I expected.....

I installed a set of Bilsteins on my rig about a month ago. Called the dealer to see how they mounted - he said either way, whatever gives you the most clearance. Probably the best thing I did for the rig - it rides really great!

Re: These Bilsteins ain't what I expected.....

AJ's Dad: When i got mine I thought they looked a little cheesey, finish alone was marginal. Seem to work fine but I think the Helwig sway bar made the big differance. Seems upgrade shocks always looked bigger and were finished nicer then OEM shocks. It better be whats inside that counts.

AJ's Dad,

The shocks you received are correct. The blue boot mounts towards the top on the front and the rear mounts with metal shroud on top. The Bilsteins are great shocks. They are specific to the Excursion.

Re: These Bilsteins ain't what I expected.....

I put the shocks on Friday night and WOW!! what a difference!

The truck actually rides smoother than before. It no longer porpoises on the highway either.

I always thought a smoother ride and sharper handling were mutually exclusive, not so with these shocks.

I am impressed.

Shocks upside down with boots on the bottom is an Edlebrock. Maybe that's what you saw.

Re: These Bilsteins ain't what I expected.....

Nope. It was SuperDuty Steve's F250 in Dallas. They were Bilsteins and they were upside down. I just figured that the Excursion front end wasn't that different from an F250, that's all.

I'm not worried whether they mount up or down, I know that a monotube shock will work in either direction.

Bilstein has me as a customer for life now.

Re: These Bilsteins ain't what I expected.....

Just put my Bilsteins on last night. The key bit of info I found regarding the which end up discussion is that the lower mount has the metal sleeve and the upper mount does not, at least on my F-250 4X4. This ends up being boot/shaft down all the way around (label ends up readable as installed, not upside down). The ride is great. Easy install.

Re: These Bilsteins ain't what I expected.....

My label is readable also.

I wonder why Bilstein chose to flip them over for the Excursion? I guess we'll never know......

AJ's Dad:

Told ya the Bilsteins are good. I've heard good things about them for years and had them on a '94 Explorer. I hope they make them for the Volvo when it comes time to replace the OEM (Boge?). It's not listed for it so far.
