Around here, it seems more stations have diesel than don't these days. If one station doesn't have it, the station down the street will. The only ones that don't have it seem to be these generic no-frills stations that have sprung up.

Pretty much every small town has one or more stations selling diesel, as all the farmers buy it. Diesel is readily available along any interstate.

I think the true competition for the Excursion is the 3/4 ton Suburbans and pickup trucks. How many 3/4 ton Suburbans does GM sell? I think that would give a more accurate picture.

I agree that the Ex is more equivilant to the 3/4 ton 'burb but I don't think that means only folks looking for 3/4 ton's are buying Ex's. This is a negative for ford, IMO. As jschira has pointed out, since GM makes both the 1/2 and 3/4, they can assume the folks buying the 3/4 want it for real towing so they beef up the suspension to 3/4 ton level. Unlike ford who only sells one version that is a 3/4 ton chassis with 1/2 ton suspension. So you only think you're getting a 3/4 ton until you realize the things you need to do to make it haul like a 3/4 ton should right off the lot.

I sure wish Ford would at least offer a suspension upgrade (springs, shocks, bigger anti-sway bar) as an option.
