Thinking about an X

Well for many years I have been wanting an Xcursion PSD and now wondering if I should go ahead and get one. I would want a used one as I wouldn't buy new. My reason for wanting one is to get me out of an E350 and into something more comfortable but still have lots of room for carrying tools, parts and whatever. I am on the road alot, and rarely tow, however when I do its a 25' Welcraft boat. So my question is, What kind of mileage can I expect to get out an X on the hwy doing about 70-75? Any suggestions on where to find one at the best dealand what should the price range be, and finally, is there anything I need to look for or look out for?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Thinking about an X

I've never enjoyed a vehicle so much!

The best way I found a good deal was to get to know a sales guy at a local dealer, (someone who wont totally try to hose ya) then wait for a lease trade in before it hits the lot, i saved 2-3K!

At that speed, mileage will suffer big time. These vehicle drink fuel above 2000 rpm. The engines will run day at that speed , but do get thirsty.

Re: Thinking about an X

Going from an E350 into an Excursion you'll be in 7th heaven, they are very comfortable!
I'll agree towing a 25' at 70-75 will keep you busy at the pump for sure unless you don't mind
Purchasing a pre owned/leased could save you a few bucks and haven't heard many bad stories on used Excursions unless the Odometer was rolled back which is rare but it did happen to a member a few months back.

When I go shopping for a used vehicle especially if it could have been subject to heavy duty/severe duty (trucks/police vehicles) I check the tailpipe for smoke upon fireup that can give an idea on the engine's condition(I have a story for that).

Re: Thinking about an X

Looking for a good used Excursion can take some time if your willing to wait for the right truck for the right price.

I spent over 3 months looking at 2000 diesel X's and finally found one at a Ford dealership 80 miles away that was cheaper than anything I had seen on Ebay or autotrader. There are lot's of used PSD X's in Texas on Ebay it seems. You could do a mile search on Ebay or a mile search on www.autotrader.com to find one in your area. Make sure to do an advanced search though as most you'll find will be V8 or V10.

Here's some info on the one I found exactly one year ago this month. 2000 Limited 7.3 4x4 black with tan bottom. 104K miles with brand new Good Year tires. Overall in decent shape with some scratches and door dings here and there. Cracked grill, $50 paid for parts on Ebay and a cracked tow mirror, $152 shipped for a new OEM set on Ebay.
$18,999 after tax and license $20,400 it was a one owner truck. Now the X has 126K miles and my wife and I love it, it's her daily driver.

If your looking for X with over 90K miles you will have a hard time getting a conventional car loan as most all banks don't want to loan money on a newer vehicle with higher miles. I was left no choice but to use Ford Credit as my lender. Small down payment of $3,000 and 8.9% interest for 5 years brought my payment to $360 a month.

We don't tow much with it besides the car hauler and empty we get between 15-20 mpg. Actually last year towing the 2,500 lb GLHS and 2,000+ lb trailer keeping it under 2K RPM's I got around 15 mpg.

Things I'd look for if looking for another X or Super Duty used would be the ball joints and hub assemblies. Both are pretty spendy to have done at a dealership.

Re: Thinking about an X

Our truck didn't start doing the white smoke till like 25k-30k miles on the odo.

The "story" I was referring to is when we used to shop for used police vehicles for restoration, when it was started and smoke puffed out well that's an early sign of a ring job when it comes to 5.0L engines but not positive for the 7.3's but a Ford is a Ford.

Re: Thinking about an X

I could not imagine driving anything else. I have had 67 vehicles in my 18 years of driving, and this is by far the best. At 125k, I have no intentention of replacing this with anything but another in a few years. As for the white smoke and police vehicles, Ford V8 gas engines have never held up well (and still don't) in police use. Police cars spend a lot of time at idle, and Ford has a problem with underhood teperatures in the Crown Vic's.

Yes, you should. You'll be glad you did.

Just did a weekend trip to Road Atlanta for the ARRC in mine. Just me, no race car. Got basically 20mpg cruising between 60 and 75 depending on construction, traffic and so on.

The X is an outstanding highway cruiser, but to make it handle like it should, accept that you're going to want to do some things to it. The rear swaybar, if not already equipped, is a must. Seriously. Just about any used one is going to need shocks as well. These two mods go a long way towards fixing the kind of "wandering" feel these trucks have stock.

For towing obviously a brake controller is recommended. I think one of the board sponsors has the Tekonsha stuff with ready-made wiring harnesses that just plug and play.

Other "problem areas" to examine can include:
- Power door locks inconsistent (failing servo, easy cheap fix)
- Front windows wind down slow (nature of the beast)
- front balljoints (wear item on all super duties)
- in-dash 6 disc changer stops working

I love mine. Best vehicle I've ever owned.

Re: Thinking about an X

Ditto on "best vehicle I've ever owned."

Yes, if you get a used one that the previous owner was oblivious to necessary mods, here's my opinion on the "short list," order of importance, and estimated cost:

1) REMOVE THE ROOF RACK CROSSBARS (they are rubbing paint off) FREE
2) Replace the wiper blades with 24" (IPAA or Bosch) $40
3) Oil High Pressure Crossover hose $40
4) New Shocks $200
5) Hellwig Rear Swaybar $140 (plus free installation frustration)
6) Bigger intake (AIS, aFe, K&N, etc.) $200
7) Straight Through Muffler $40 (plus $60 installation if you don't weld)

Then you can add gauges, chip/programmer, etc. You won't regret it, but I'd set aside $1,000 UP FRONT for these necessary modifications.

OH YEAH, make sure the dealer replaces your fuel filter (and cleans out the bottom of the fuel bowl) before you take delivery. If you don't know the previous owner, odds are they have greatly neglected this frequent maintenance procedure. Might as well have them do the air filter too.

Yep, forgot about the 24" blades and the roof rack. The blades are very worthwhile. FWIW, the "Teflon Blade" ones I buy at Costco (believe they're made by Trico) have been quite good.

3) Oil High Pressure Crossover hose $40

Tailgate, what is this high pressure crossover hose you speak of? Is this some sort of mod or is it a wear item that needs to be replaced? In all my browsing around in here this one's new to me. PM if you would rather not steer this thread off track.

Re: Thinking about an X

Silly Rookie Questions

Do you replaced the High Pressure Oil Crossover Line once a year like Dieselsite.com suggests?

http://www.dieselsitetoo.com/index.a...&ProdID=50
*We recommend these hoses, as well as the OEM high pressure hoses, to be replaced once a year on highly modified trucks.*

What are the OEM high pressure hoses they are talking about beside the after market High Pressure Oil Crossover Line?

Thanks,

-Mike

Re: Thinking about an X

I don't know how many high pressure hoses there is but I've seen one or two others on top of the engine.

I've had my one aftermarket unit installed for over two years now with no issues even tho some feel to play it safe to replace it once a year, the cost is low compared to what can happen if one was to fail.

Apparently there's a gentleman that's developing/testing a solid high pressure crossover kit to replace the more common flexible HX kits.

And it's ok to ask Rookie questions, that's what the forum is for
