Thinking GPCM - Where is it????

Hi all:

Been a while since I visited. My 01 Ex with 70K is a garage queen always inside except for summer trips to some shows. I start and moved it weekly and all of sudden yesterday,; she does want to start. My warehouse is about 50-55 degrees and I'm cranking for 5-10 seconds before she will kick over. Once running she is her usual perfect self. From my reading and research at the forum....I'm thinking the GPCM could be bad. Here is the low down:
  • Hard starting.
  • Thrown no codes, which is puzzling.....
  • AutoTap reads 0 amps to both right and left glow plug banks, yet I'm not sure the parameter is properly measured by AutoTap software???
How do I find the GPCM and is there anyway of testing it? Is the the cylinder shaped relay looking gyzmo under the pass side of the fuel filer cover with four wires OR the longer rectangular bar module with two large plugs further to the rear on the pass side in the V-valley??

A map would be great and thoughts on the problem even better.

Thanks,

TOM

I think you would get alot of help in the 7.3 forum. I am by no means an expert but I think only CA truck had the GPCM and everything else had a glow plug relay. Try searching the 7.3 forum

All excursions have the GPCM, at least all after a certain year. It is also installed on California pickups.

It is located on top of the motor to the right and back a bit from the fuel filter (at least on a 7.3). Its a silver box with a bunch of cooling fins on it. There are two large connectors on it.

If you are having problems check the connectors first, they may be bad. There are replacments available but you have to splice them in. You can buy a new GPCM onlike for about $130, don't buy if from the dealer for $220.

Do a google search for GPCM and you will find all the details.

My 03 7.3 X has the hard start problems, but I got a code (P0683) that told me either it was the GPCM or the PCM. I went for the GPCM and will be replacing it as soon as the unit arrives in the mail.

I just replaced my GPCM... it's a aluminum rectangular module with 2 huge multi plugs right to the back left of the fuel bowl. mine starts and runs great now.
