Trailer Wiring Question on my 03 Excursion

Background if kept my tired old Suburban, towed the car trailer with it last night and noticed that the trailer's interior lights work with it.

They have never worked with the Excursion, asked my friend with an F250 truck and he said his have never worked either.

So, is there a way to wire the hookup so the lights do work?

Thanks for any help

sounds like you need to swap you trailer lights to the center "auxillary"pin on the 7 way, See if this helps

No, that will only make them work when he's in reverse.

There is an open spot in the power distribution box under the hood. Stick a new relay there, trailer battery circuit will now work any time the key is on.

It's that simple as putitng a relay in the distribution block? No wires to run, and it will only work with the key is on? I see the wisdom in that, but is there anyway to make it hot all the time?

Thanks

Randy here is the pinout fom my 2005 dvd
You should not have to add a relay it should be in your truck.

The pin you want is pin 5 the orange trailer battery charge circuit.
As said below it is only hot in run.

You could add a small batery to your trailer or add a breakaway battery and circuit.
Then the lights connect to the battery and the you use the circuit 5 as intended to charge a battery. Some states require a breakaway circuit as I understand it. Not sure if there are restrictions on using this battery for lighting. Should work fine since you use the lights while parked.

Pin----Circuit
1------52 (YE) Trailer tow relay, left turn, switched power

2------206 (WH) Ground

3------43 (DB) "not used" But wired for your brake controller

4------64 (DG) Trailer tow relay, right turn, switched power

5------49 (OG) Trailer tow relay, battery charge, switched power

6-----962 (BN/WH)Trailer tow relay, parking lamp, switched power

7-----963 (BK/LG) Trailer tow relay, reversing lamp, switched power

Hope this helps

I didn't have to add a relay to get my trailer lights (horse trailer interior light in parallel with the battery charger circuit) to work. I did have to add a fuse in the junction box under the hood. I would tell you which one but the wife has the Excursion today. Look in the owners manual on the power distribution fuse page - it is listed as something like the trailer battery circuit. Separate from the trailer brake circuit. From the factory there was no fuse there, but all the circuit is in place.

That's position 115 in my manual. Did you add the suggested 30 amp fuse or go with something lighter because you were using it only for trailer interior lights, not trailer battery charge?

Thanks,

Position 115 on my rig already has a 30 amp fuse in it. Would the member who mentioned adding a relay to the fuse box care to mention what position that was?

Thanks,
