I was in Kalispell Montana yesterday and everything was fine on the way. I ran inside to an appointment and my wife waited out in the X with the kids. It was snowing and about 33 degrees(no crap!!) so I left it running. My wife said she turned if off for about 20 minutes and had the stereo on, she had the lights off and everything else, had the key back and just the stereo on. When I came out to start it, it was dead. We called some family and we jumped it, and it started fine. The battery guage was bottomed out and would go up with the throttle, seems normal until the batteries charged back up. We got about 2 miles away and the overdrive "off" button started flashing and the engine would rev up and down when I tried to give it throttle and it did not want to go. So, I idled around a bit and then tried and was able to work through that and get it up to speed. The next couple stop lights it did the same thing until the battery guage stayed up, the light went off, and it was fine again. Its only does it when that light was flashing and the battery guage was down. So, its almost seems like its a electrical problem and if the tranny does not have the juice it needs, it does not want to operate correctly. But, this is my first ford and I am in the dark. Any suggestions. It only has 97,000 miles on it and the tranny always shifts great normally and seems to run perfect. Thanks, I am off to work. I drive a 50 ton haul truck in a underground mine. It has a 19 litre cummins that holds 16 gallons of oil and 170 gallons of fuel. She has some power!

Your alternator is going, mine did the same thing.

I drove 300 miles on battery power only, I sat and watch the elec sysem shut down one by one, last was the tranny in limp home mode. Started with XM, then radio, then back lights, windows....still open and rain ahead, gages in one click all were gone. Now it could be a speed sensor too, the one on the rear end or front of motor. Now that I think of it if you did not have the rest go you would have the sensor, dealer can find it on the computer. Second time on the alt.....don't believer the hype, a truck cannot run without one....for long that is. Found an auto zone open memorial day at 7pm, had a dirt bike on the back hitch tray and rode it to the shop.....lost an hour.

Thanks for the replys. The radio was totally dim and would not run on for a bit, checked all the fuses and everything was fine. Started driving, amp guage went up, and the clock on the radio turned back on. I will take it and get the alternator checked. The napa here has a tester where you dont have to take it off, and they can check it while its running. Thanks guys.

Could just be a bad battery. Mine was acting strangely like that and actually quite on the road and wouldn't restart. Two fresh batteries and I was good to go. That was 6 months ago.
Good idea to get the alternator tested, anyway, though. I'd get the batteries tested, too.

My wife kept telling me about wierd things like this happening in the various electrical displays - turned out to be the alternator on ours too. Good luck.

I threw away the Optima red tops I had in my cars not long after getting them. I'm sorry but Optima batteries are junk and have no real cranking power even in my V6 Buicks. I can't imagine them working worth a crap in a big truck like this.
