1992 E350 extended with 7.3L diesel

From the pics the body and interior seem to be in good condition - it is the passenger version. The owner says the engine is in good condition but "The motor runs gd with the block heater plugged in and not so good without it until it warms up." Reverse does not work.

I think I can get this for $500-600. I want to make a mini-motor home out of it, including installing a fiberglass raised roof.

Is this a solid engine? Can the present tranny (I think it is the 4 speed auto) be replaced with a 5 speed auto? Would it be a simple swap or would I be looking at grief? How about a manual 5 speed?

I have been searching your site for likely mpg for this van and get a broad range, from 9 to 18 (both freeway). What am I to think?

I have questions about ways to improve mileage with this but will try to search first.

I used to have a 1992 diesel Born Free rv that got 11 mpg. It was custom made as a sales office so it did not have a frig, stove shower etc. If this is a hobby or project, I would say go for it. Money wise you might end up at the same price or more as buying one ready to go and you will miss one, maybe two good camping seasons

The 5R110 5 speed didn't come out until the 6.0, which has a different bell housing than the 7.3. So they're not interchangeable. Sounds like a god deal, the 7.3 is a great engine.

As for starting and running good with or without block heater that could be just some glow plugs not working. For IDI engine info visit the 7.3 IDI truck page...... there is a ton of info there. Also visit my photo link for more.......

Just show a signature with your Eseries van and options....... we can go from there in the right direction to help you.
