1998 PSD Van Questions

I know this has probably been discussed before but I'm a little lazy to search. What's the deal with 1998 PSDs in the van? Are these more like 94-97 PSD's or more like 1999-2003 or the "early 99" versus "late 1999" I have seen discussed. Or because its a van is it some convoluted combination of new stuff and leftover stuff.

Would this year have old or new style HPOP? What about LL8 injector? In general is this a good year? 1998 is 4R100 or still E40D?

Thanks!

Re: 1998 PSD Van Questions

Off the top dog--98 good
Drivetrain
97- Change to new HPOP, Splitshot (AB) inj,e4od, water pump, new dash,Blue lighted dash and controls.
98- no changes
99- Fuel changes (filter,pump,AD split)
00-4R100, air box intake (99/00)
??-semi float rear (rear disk)
??- cooling fan from steel to plastic

************************************************** ******
EDITED FOR QUESTION---Forgot an IMPORTANT one!!!
What year was the changeover to G-05 GOLD COOLANT???
************************************************** ******

Body-- Mostly cosmetics--grills,mirriors ect
There are a few other changes don't remember year change. Stupid stuff
Weather strips were completely around doors, changed to halfway.
Color of lighted dash to green (00?). Tinted windsheild. Dog house cover.

The bad thing about this sight is you cannot go back to find old info in van section.

Re: 1998 PSD Van Questions

I think they went to the semi-float rear sometime in 2001. I remember LarryM complaining that he got one in his '01, but I have a full-float in mine...

Re: 1998 PSD Van Questions

I run into the same thing when trying to purchase most anything aftermarket. I have been looking at items at Dieselsite and the year range is 94 thru 97 or 99 thru 03.

Input for 1998 Van I'm Considering

So THIS is the van I'm going to look at as a potential replacement for the '03. Any advice on what to look for that would be a deal buster?

Carfax looks good in terms of miles, miles seems right. Service info on Carfax matches Service on Oasis. From photos, if I had to guess, it was hit on right front (looks like new bumper, no emblem on right front fender, emblem present on LF.)

Oasis shows some in warranty repairs including new fuel tank(recall), oil leak (pull motor reseal pan) GPR, EBPV and Wastegate repairs (thought vans didn't have wastegate? My'03 didn't, does 1998?) some other stuff I can't remember, no trans work on Oasis.

Where do the oil pans typically rust out?
Would low or no SCA level be a no sale deal?
Hopefully they will let me remove intake to inspect turbo, etc.
Any upnorth specific stuff I should look for other than obvious rust on suspension/frame etc.

Any commments on price? Values ar all over the place depending on where you look Edmunds (low), KBB(med), NADA (high).

Thanks Guys!

Wastegate Repair???
A low or no SCA would not break a deal for me due to you have to work the psd hard to get hot spots in the cyl to cause pinholes. Just don't work hard in a van. Odds in your favor.

Thats what the Oasis says,(for power loss complaint) "found plug missing from top of wastegate, broke bolt trying to remove, had to extract and tap,..."

Same dealer also worked on EBPV, sensor and cleaned tube. So you would think they know the difference between a wastegate and an EBPV?

So no wastegate then I take it?

Another reason Ford is in the red, paying dealer for repairs on parts vehicles don't have. I worked for a multi-line jap motorcycle dealer back in the day. They scrutinize their warranty claims and the warranty claim program wouldn't let you select an operation code that didn't apply to the vehicle (early 90's DOS based program even)

In reponse to your edit question above, Gold G-05 Coolant was introduced sometime mid 2002. My '03 had it. Per the coolant threads this 98 is NOT a candidate for ELC (Not gold or the good stuff Gooch recommends). Will have to maintain SCA.

Re: Input for 1998 Van I'm Considering

Dont really know.
Had my head in tony's van 03 (7up). I think it had a wastegate. Not shure. It was a long time ago.

Larry's little sec is good but with all the time he put into the list he should have had more van specific, being he had a van.

Come on larry we know your watching.

Re: Input for 1998 Van I'm Considering

I know the '03 doesn't have one, mine didn't. I always thought van's didn't have one because no room for WG controller. If your doesn't have one, I'm guessing the 98 doesn't either.

Re: Input for 1998 Van I'm Considering

I thought the same no gate.
No wastegate 97.

I like to see the warrenty repair # that the dealer billed ford under.
Seems they paid for a repair that don't exist.

Re: Input for 1998 Van I'm Considering

The Oasis I have is a Fax copy twice removed, so some numbers are hard to read. Larry may be watching, but he won't be responding, his account is gone. You can reach him over at NOVAPS, I bent his ear on some towing questions I had a while back. The problem with the archives has affected the Little Secrets. While you can still read the main threads in the little secrets, most links within a thread that point to the archives give you a "we cannot proceed" message now.

I was going to hook up the guy with the Filter install question, but links to LarryM's Dahl install thread are dead. He never made it a separate one in Van Unique, the link was imbedded in another pre-pump mod filter discusson. Too bad no one maintains the Little Secrets anymore, to me its way easier than search.
