E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Just got my new '00 van. I think the PSD is much noisier than my old '97. It also takes longer to start than the '97 did. I have to crank it for almost 4 seconds to start it. The '97 would start right up in less than 1 second. The new engine cover console is much less attractive than the older one. It seems to be just a hole in the cover - no lid or hinged cover. The rugs are also of lesser quality. All these must be cost savings to Ford...

I can't compare to a 97, but I am SUPRISED how quiet the diesel is in our 2000 E350. I was originally planning on getting the marine engine kit mentioned on another topic, but have decided I don't think it will make it any quieter. Anyone installed it on a 2000 yet?
I AM a little suprised on the length of time to start though, a friend here has a 97 F250 and he commented on how much longer the van takes to start than his too. I guess the important thing is that it does start!
By the way, we are leaving on a trip from MN to Ontario, California starting tomorrow (10/30). Should be a nice "break in" trip for the van. Look for us on I35 and I40. White with a double blue stripe and a "Sunnybrook Swoosh" and of course MN plates.
We got 19.5 mpg on the last tank, a lot of 60mph driving with the cruise on.

My 99 was pretty quiet out of the box as well. I was not going to put the insulation kit. I decided it couldn't hurt though so I tried it. WOW!!! What a difference. I can't believe that I was going to live with that noise. I don't know if the 2000 is any quieter than the 99 from the factory, just that it made my 99 a lot quieter.
Enjoy your trip!

The longer time to start is during cranking. I think it's done with any self-check by the time the wait to start light goes out.
I also hear some vibrations that weren't present in my last van. Sounds like a loose hood but that isn't it. I used to be able to get a nice "brap" noise out of the PSD by tapping lightly on the accelerator but I don't get that anymore.
I've also got a slow leak in a tire (it was delivered that way - the tire looked low when I picked it up), need a balance, and an alignment. The stereo causes an awful vibration in one of the back door panels.
I have a nasty knock when cruising (not speeding up or slowing down).
My father-in-law was surprised by all these little things. He said "Gee, my Toyota 4Runner was perfect since day one."

Check your Torque Converter on the "rattle" noise. I was under my can one day when it was idling and found a huge rattle noise from the converter area. Had the dealer change the converter under the TSB and man "oh how sweet the quiet is"

I was surprised too about the long cranking time before I thought back to my previous life. The Cat 3126's have the HEUI fuel system and they take a few extra cranks as compared to any other model Cat. Most new (non-HEUI) ones start on the first jug to come up with a full gulp of air. On any HEUI there is not any mechanical part to push down the injector. It has to have sufficient high pressure oil to begin cycling the injectors. Takes just a few extra turns to get the high pressure oil going. I'm plugging mine in for cold weather and consider the extra turns means the oil is moving further before the first pop. Now if the starter just lasts.... I have plenty of battery since Itasca has a switch in the driver's area that hooks ALL the batteries together for a real quick start.
