3" Walker BTM instead of 3.5"

Getting ready to replace my stock muffler and having trouble locating a 3.5" replacment (at least I thought I needed a 3.5") local muffler shops are telling me that my '97 PS E350 exhaust necks down from 3.5" to 3" at the coverter and that they have a Dynamax straight thru 3" muffler that should be a direct fit?

Is this what I should be doing? or do I someone cut the converter off and run 3.5" pipe back? seems none of the muffler shops around don't want to do any work on stuff over 3"
