95 E350 7.3 PSD runs rough

I have been lurking in the shadows watching this wonderful sight. I have found allot of great info.

I have problem with my van now, at 123k it is running rough and down on power, when accellerating at low rpm it vibrates bad.

I have changed the oil and oil filter, using the same deisel oil that I have for the last 120k, and I did add a bottle of Lucas 100% synthetic oil stabilizer (it was not good before that also), the fuel filter was also changed.

One day I went to start the van, it was hard to start, after cranking for a while it fired up and has not run good since then.

Could this be a oil pressure or injector problem or perhaps somthing deaper like a mechanical problem with the motor.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Never Never add Lucas . . . I can cause the oil to FOAM . Drain the oil and filter and replace with proper oil like Rotella T or similar oil which is RATED for powerstrokes . The oil system runs the injectors. If the oil has the wrong characteristics it will run like crap.

Thanks for the reply,

The oil I used is Rotella T 15w40, according to Lucas they said only use the 100% synthetic in the Powerstroke (I followed their recomendations).

It was running poorly before I put it in. But, if that will have an adverse effect on its running, I will change the oil again.

as per the Lucas website.

Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer

Light enough for an import - Tough enough for a semi. Use in new equipment which requires synthetic oils or any equipment that needs enhanced performance. Also, can be used to protect new and used Heavy Duty and High Performance transmissions, gear boxes and engines. Controls heat and wear in motorcycles, air-cooled engines and all drive train components. Reduces friction for more power and more MPG.
In Ford Powerstrokes we suggest one quart of Pure Synthetic Oil Stabilizer per oil change.

If it's running rough like you say make sure the IPR nut is tight and connections on the IPR and ICP are clean and solid. You might have UVC harness issues as well. If you can teset the HPOP for pressure do it. It should be min 500 psi at Idle. At WOT it should be over 2500. I would also do an Injector contribiution test to pinpoint the problem if it is injectors. It's probably UVC harnessess or main harness. See if the clips smell burn't.

HPOP = high pressure oil pump located at front of engine above timing cover
UVC = Under valve cover harnessess . . . there are 2 per head / bank hence the 2 connectors
IPR =Injection Pressure Regulator . . .located in / beside HPOP resevoir in the back of it
ICP =Injection Pressure Control sensor . . . located in the Drivers side head in the front
FPR = Fuel presssure regulator . . . located on the side of the filterbowl /water separator assembly
There are links to the Factory Manuals all over this site . . . I don't know how to post them. I suck at that stuff . If you go over to the 94-97 Powerstroke forum there are alot of posts on what is happening to your truck . Over a third of them are Hard Start / Rough Start Running related. You might also have low fuel pressure. After I did the BB shim on mine it ran alot better. Your FPR screen might be full of crap too . By the way I like your page , My 1045 KZ is ready to Turbo , crank's welded, its blueprinted and I have the HD studs. Good luck and check out the archives in this section "Little secrets " and the 94-97 forum.

I pulled the FPR on the side of the filter housing (what a *****), checked the screen and it was about 50% blocked.

Put it back together and have been driving it some for the last couple of days and it seems to run better, will know more after I try pulling my trailer with it.

Thanks

Make sure you are getting proper fuel pressure. It should be about 60-65 psi. If not you can shim it with a 5/16 BB. You put a 0-100 psi guage with long enough hose and connect it to the shreader Valve on the filterbowl. ( Its the thing that looks like a tire nipple) .You can also use a tire guage to test Fuel Pressure.
