E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I have been making changes to my 95 E-350 to try to help a rough running problem, and it is getting better, (but not fixed).
Everything I have done has helped a little, but I am afraid that I am missing the main problem. I need some help.
Fuel pressure was low, around 35lbs, put in a new pump now its 65, (what a crummy job that was) that helped, cleaned the screen that was about 3/4 blocked on the filter, that helped too.
Changed back to the Castrol 15/40 diesel oil that I have been using for years, that helped some too.
But it still is running rough mostly at mid-range rpm, high rpm its better, but is lacking any power for pulling hills with the trailer like it use to do.
At 120k miles I dont think the motor is tired yet. I would think that it could be an injector problem, but if an injector is stuck wouldnt I be getting alot of smoke from the exhaust, currently there is none.
If it is down on boost how will the motor act, or this new EPA happy diesel?
Could I have put the fuel filter in wrong? (I followed the instructions).
Thanks for all the suggestions I have had in the past.
Did you change the air filters? Is the MAP sensor OK ? Are all intake boots tight ? How much Boost are you making ? Check Turbo wheel for Nicks / Sandblasting . Maby you need new UVC harnesses. Are you getting any codes ?

Is there a way to test the Map sensor without just replacing it? Air filters are clean, turbo didnt have any nicks in it. The intake is all stock (and tight).
I dont know on how much boost it is making. Will low boost result in poor running at crusing and mid throttle?
Can I check for codes without any special tools?
Thanks much

YES for the MAP , try unplugging it for a day or so to see if mileage improves , also maybe you EBPV is sticking or you EBPV sensor is malfunctioning , all of these affect mileage /performance
I bought one for nothing too 127 bucks I think it was . . At least I have a SPARE . . .
As far as codes go you need a good scan tool if you plan on keeping the truck you should buy one like Auto Enginiuty or AutoTap or a good Actron one (they are all 200-400 bucks ) or Pay the 100 bucks each time to the meccanic . FOR ME IT WAS A NO BRAINER After ythe first scan I bought one right away . Best 400 bucks I ever spent outside a Strip Joint . . . You should try to find out how much boost you are making , it should max out at 14-17 PSI . Good Luck

The Map sensor does not aaffect the boost .It tells the computer HOW MUCH boost you are making so it will deliver the correct amount of fuel . So if Map Sensor is faulty you get poor mileage /performance. MAXIMUM Stock boost is 14-17 psi under load . . .
Replace the line with quality diesel rated hose and change the clamps to the screw type . If you are getting low boost you have a leak OR Turbo Impeller is Toast . . . Mayby you have an exhaust restriction (Clogged Cat) /exhaust leak ? OR you need new Up-pipe donuts. Check for soot areound the Up-pipies Exhaust Manifolds .

I crawled up under my van, and yes in front of the muffler there is another rather large cannister, that I will have to assume that it is the Catylitic convertor.
So, they will can get clogged? most of my miles have been on the freeway with a trailer, hard to beleive that it would get loaded up. Stranger things have happened though.
