Adding intercooler

Just to give you a little background.I Bought a 97 E-350 psd turbo a four months ago and last month my wife and i pulled the motor to rebuild as it wasn,t running when I bought it. It came from northern Ohio and every thing in this thing had more ruct than you would believe I guess they never wash any of the salt off nor did they pre-treat it.The oil pan has holes in it and is too far gone to reuse and the oil cooler looks way to rusty to be comfortable with and the turbo pedestal is leaking. Have a chance to buy a donor 2001 7.3 psd with a intercooler turbo and the other parts that I need. Has anyone ever done this kind of interchange? How much will i have to change or can it be done. What else will i have to change?

Re: Adding intercooler

Start with a better truck! By the time you put in a motor, etc. You'll have more time & $$ in it than a nice one would cost. Good luck, Bart

Re: Adding intercooler

The motor itself should fit. If you intend to try and run the intercooler plumbing from the f-series, your in somewhat uncharted water. You can swap the intake stuff over from the van motor and run non -intercooled, that's how the vans are set up.Don't know if the wastegated turbo will fit from the F motor. Might need to reuse van turbo. Sorry can't be more help.

Re: Adding intercooler

As far as I know the 7.3 in the vans never had an intercooler. They didn't put them in till the 6.0 went in. The van and truck turbo housings are the same, but the inners are different. A buddy put a Banks kit on his 75 van that he installed a 7.3 in. The kit worked with some slight modifications. He had to get the truck turbo tho and swapped the new turbo core from the Banks kit to work.

Re: Adding intercooler

I have a 95 E-350 with a 7.3. I was wondering if a 6.0 intercooler will bolt into a earlier van then I could have some tubes fabbed up to fit. Has anybody tried this?

Re: Adding intercooler

I don't think the 7.3 versions have any room for an intercooler. I've looked at mine and couldn't see any way to get it in. The 6.0 is either shorter or sts back further and the rad and A/C coil sit farther back and the intercooler goes in front of it. It is about the same size as the rad.
