aftermarket setups

I have been reading the FAQ and Signature lines trying to get some tips on the name and model of things like bypass kits, trans coolers, etc. I am hoping to get specific names and models so that I can get prices etc. Not really wanting to debate any particular type, just some references. It could be I am not reading the sig lines properly. My 98 model is stock and I will be pulling a 8000 travel trailer up into Alaska which I here is mostly gravel roads. This may limit my air filter to a stock setup because of the amount of dust. (please correct me if I am wrong....newbie) I do not want to modify the engine, just install add on's like coolers and bypass kits, additives, etc. Any specific brand and model would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time !!

Re: aftermarket setups

I would highly recommend a chip or pcm burn from Jody and a valve assembly to increase your line pressure. If you are going to tow an 8000 lb trailer you are going to need a pyro meter and trans temp gauge at a minimum. Check out suncoast for options or contact Brian's Truck stop. A BTS trans is in my opinion the best replacement available. I'm not sure if they offer band aid fixes, my guess is that is not their deal. Hope that helps.

Re: aftermarket setups

You can drive to Alaska on only paved roads if you want. I prefer to go up the Cassiar Highway, it may be gravel, but it is in better condition than most paved roads. The sightseeing is better on this less traveled route. And we saw more bears on the little side trip to Stewart, Alaska than we did anywhere else outside of Denali.

Get a copy of the Milepost www.themilepost.com before you go. It lists all the roads and sights along the way. You will find things through the book that you could never find yourself.

Re: aftermarket setups

6L, I am waiting on the '07 Milepost to come out now. I have lost the '06. BlizzardMan, if the trans temp climbs too high, what are you doing to lower it while you drive? Pull off and wait for it to cool down?

Re: aftermarket setups

Trans temps are not a problem with a BTS. If you doe spike your trans temps you have to shut it down or you will destroy seals, bearings, clutch pack material...anything that requires your trans fluid to keep lubricated. I think about 200 is the limit before serious damage results.

Re: aftermarket setups

Your fluid looses its lubricating properties after burnt.(Some use synthetic which gives you a little more forgiveness. approx 25 degrees more?) So if you know temps ran a little high, do a service of fluid change. Also a guage can tell you if your by-pass valve gets stuck during warm-up. Which again if caught, you have the option of a repair & fluid change rather than a surprise burn-up. Hopefully a guage can tell if a tranny is starting to go if you have a feel for temps for particular trip, by seeing an increase in temps, thus slipping.(maybe wishfull thinking) On highway above 55 the TC should be locked up, so no slipping would mean in theroy, cooler temps. My temps are highest in stop & go trafic.

Re: aftermarket setups

Looks like my first mod will be Amsoil Bypass setup. I noticed on their web site big trucks using their Synthetic heavy-duty diesel and marine 15-w40 oil. Seems like a long time between oil changes. http://syntheticoildealer.com/1462207/am...ne_teardown.htm is that overkill for a 7.3, and would a different oil thickness get better fuel mileage?
