Altenator Output
I could use a little feedback.I recently had to replace the regulator on the 165 amp leece-neville alternator on my 90 E 350 retired ambulance.[I think I fried it with a careless jump start] Anyway,I had noticed that both batteries were "boiling" constantly indicating an overcharge. So using the manuals I did some testing with my multimeter doing the ignition on,off and running voltage checks. If I'm not mistaken I think the battery voltage was 12.36 and 12.34 and when hooked up and running it was up to something like 14.38 with the help of the alternator.I thought that was high untill I had the alternator in my hands where I could see the thing and on the regulator was a sticker that said something like replace with this number regulator and set to 14.25 volts.Well, I took it in for a complete rebuild and every thing seemed fine. But the next day whan I tried to start it again it cranked progressively slower and slower and of course woudn't start,so with a propper jump I got it started and did a voltage check and got a reading of 13.17. Sooo, does anybody have a similar alternator that knows what their voltage reading is while running?. I could be wrong, but I thought it was up in the 14's before the rebuild although I still dont know how the drop in voltage would cause the van's starting problems. The batteries still read o.k. Sorry to be so long winded,Thank You, James.
