E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I have been looking at air filters since I installed my W-D chip. Installed the Amsoil filter and got a lot more air. My engine was starving for air before ( I could tell by the black smoke when my foot was in it). Now there is not much smoke, runs better too. I am now getting the added mileage that W-D said I would get with the chip. I had been getting 16-17 now I'm getting 19+.

These engines will smoke with more fuel from the chip. Unless you have enough air to burn all the fuel you will get black smoke. I got the filters from Bob Riley who advertises on here. The filters were $70 for the pair including shipping and filter oil. Remember they are reusable. I'll bet my diesel is faster than anyones who is not using propane. Maybe I'll do that next

How much cash do have invested in the mods, and is it worth it.
The reason I ask is that I know I need a little more get up and go when towing, but I am really nervous about engine and drive train damage, I have been vacillating for quite a while about a chip or a gear swap.
So how do these compare to the K&N's. I've seen lots of folks recommending the K&N filters, but this is the first time I've seen someone mention an Amsoil filter.
Jeeperman,
The Amsoil filter filters much better than the K&N, but our filter was a special order type till about three weeks ago. Now it is a stock item in the wharhouses, so expect to see a little more about them in your vans.

Bob H,
How about a lot of get up and go. The chip was the most expencive. The muffler and filters were relativly cheep. This van screems now. I would not worry about the drive train if you do your maintanance on it. Remember the F-350 4X4 duelies have the same tranny and engine and they are a lot heavier. I sure don't have to worry about passing on a hill now.

Hey, Bob, are the filters available for an older diesel van? What's the price, approximately?
TIA
