another air intake question

Why is a cone type filter mod, with a scoop, better than the OEM. I read about them all the time and am contemplating starting a project next month to install one on my van. However, I had a friend ask me today, "Why"? I didn't have an answer except to say for better air intake which I could not substantiate. The twin K&N's have 2 unobstructed vents coming from the front of the grill so does the cone 'really' provide more air to the turbo?

I think the "cone " shape is just that a shape , to better fit in the F series boxes / air raid/ whatever housings designed fot the f-series trucks. As you know aftermarket manufacturers don't give a rats ass about Econolines, since we are a very small market.
That being said many on this forum and other places have taken it upon themselves to rectify this. Blizzard and Sixiron have the simplest /best setup so far. It's all bout best bang for the buck. If I wasn't a roofer /tradesman I would do the scoop thing too. Unfortunately my truck is a mule, not a show horse, so I modify it in other areas like suspension / exhaust and soon Baby swamps. I am stickiing to the Ford 1618 deals which I buy by the case , and change them more often. When I have the time I will probably do the "T" cone thing and build a style of scoop /cowl Induction vibe, similar to the 70's Camaro's /Trans ams which will be "construction" proof. I am thinking Aluminium housing and Intake pipe like Blizzard. Six has not posted pictures yet so I can just Imagine what his is like. But he removed the stock filterbowl like Blizzard to incrase space. I don't think I will be doing that . . .

The shape of the filter medium doesn't matter it is the volume of air you get with the least amount of restriction. I have a 4" unresticted path back to my turbo. This whole process began because I was sucking the stock intake flat and killing the motor when I came up on boost. This is why the 4" wire wound hose was such a find.

Surface area wise, circular is usually more effiecent than flat or square for a given space. I use a large oval in the fiberglass scoupe/box I built. I still believe this is the best mod and necessary to get the full benefit out of all other engine mods.

As another interested bystander, can you describe the improvement of your new intake over stock? Either seat-of-the-pants, or some other way?

Before I changed the intake I wasn't able to even drive the van very hard. The minute I put my foot to the floor the van would beging to take off and build boost then die. The stock plumbing would suck flat like a cheap straw because of the restriction in the stock system. It took me months to figure out what was going on. If you are going to really try to get into the 400 hp range with a 7.3 I think you should start with the air intake. Especially if you are going to up the turbo cfm.
