E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I need to drop the tank on the van again and am wondering if anyone had any pearls of wisdom to share that might make this less of a pain in the neck. Do I really need to remove both straps like the manual says?
Thanks
Colin
Re: anything make dropping the mid fuel tank easier?
COLIN
I just installed a 46gal transferflow tank. I did not do the fuel mod but the tank is easy to work with two jacks, one at each end. It is a cut and dry job. All hoses and wiring is easy to get to from over the top of the chassis.
Re: anything make dropping the mid fuel tank easier?
Did the same 35 -> 46 tank swap in Nov. Yes, the straps need to be removed. Used only one large floor jack. Prop the tank up on 4"x4" wood blocks or whatever you've got handy as you lower it to the ground. Balancing both tanks in the center was pretty easy, did the job by myself. The stock tank is much lighter than transferflow unit. Hopefully your doing this empty! The spring fuel line disconects are a pain, but other that it's a straight forward job as Bill mentioned.
Re: anything make dropping the mid fuel tank easier?
Keil say's EMPTY! But I think I read somewhere that it's better to make sure the tank is completely full, something about "less sloshing". ps Do it on a warm day, cause the fuel will be less dense, so it should be considerably lighter Wish I could be there to help. Tony

You gotta be kidding me.. doing it with it full? Have you tried moving 35 gallons of diesel it's like.. 300 lbs. Mine was 1/4 full when i took mine off and me and my friend had a heck of a time handling it. I can't imgine trying to do anything with it full. And i do believe that it doesn't matter what the temp is outside, either way it will be the same weight. Just because it's more dense if when it's cold doesn't make more or less fuel. *shrugs* i'm not an expert tho.. so i dunno.
