E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
unforunately I have a e4od and it's not a workhorse, unless I spend a pile of $$$$ on it ........ changing to a man 5spd would be cheaper , given that we have 8 picanpul cheepo yards around here ... a zf 5spd would run around 120$-145$ ,140$ more w tranfercase, 40$ for pedal parts and 60$ for hydralic parts.... 200$ for a f350 dana front axle, some more for the springs found a e4od today , first one I've seen still in a van .. 145$ ....... also found a e150 w 3 on the tree, got the slave cyl but someone got the clutch pedal and cross bar.. they left the master cyl for the same reason I had to leave it :the bolts were so rusted they broke out the inserts in the plastic mastr cyl got the rod tho..... cause I'm smarter than them I took the cyl apart
found a trans . only 100 mls away, for 375$ .. all the picanpul yards are full of clunker cars and all the vans that would be doners for my project are gone ....... one yard had so many clunker cars that they stored them out in the packing lot and we had to park in a field..... even saw a nice 4 yr old Jag w a seized engine painted day-glo red ... can't touch a thing on the engine .... saving up for a luk clutch kit now.
I found one of the rarest of van parts today: a dana 60 w a factory LSD diff and 3.54 gearing ...... under a '91 e350 !! took it and the engine wiring harness, also found a stock tach too. w a extra 16" rim for a spare, got it all for $240.... my son (thanks dean!!) helped me to get it out , we had to roll it at least a 1/2 mile 'cause it was at the Far back of the yard, and in richmond the front is on the street and the yard is down a dirt road and over a bridge on the other side of the creek..... (might even be in the next town) my son observed that it would be a good place to defend against a zombie attack since it was a 1/4 mile square w 10' high steel wall w 5 ' of electified barbed wire on top of that.. the swap project continues
I went to Novato ford monday, talked to the parts guy .. he knew exactly what I was up to !! he called the parts system ,and there are no clutch pedal parts available from ford any where now for any econoline ..... Dam..... so I'll use f350 pedal parts instead. I'll have to use the heat wrench on them .... ordered the clutch kit 500$ poorer now .... and today I'm installing the d60 lsd I found in richmond lst wk..... oh joy.......
So today I made a clutch/brake pedal box for my van ,,, I used a stock pedal hanger bracket from a '90 van , and pedals from a '92 f350... I bored new holes in the hanger so that the stock f350 plastic bushing fit in to hold the clutch cross bar , welded washers on the outside to reinforce the new (big!) holes and give the bushings a larger surface to ride on ... I had to swap the pin for the brake push rod to the other side of the brake arm , but that was easy, just ground off the weld on the backside and punched it out , put it in on the other side, and now it's a van ,not pu brake pedal .... my friend kenny insisted on going overboard as usual so the worn mastercyl pushrod pin got a new pin made from drill rod and a brass bush made from a worn out triumph valve guide..... a careful guy could do all the stuff we did w a gas welder and files ... Yes I did take pix of the whole thing
this would be a Lot easier if I had removed the steering column and the seat ..... today I bored the holes in the floor for the clutch mstr cyl .... man , there is No room down there .. I will have to "adjust" the holes w a file . just can't get in there straight w a drill... Big hole : 1 1/2" , bolt holes: 3/8" the whole thing : msrt cyl and slave cyl will have to assembled w the hose and then installed , cause there's no room underneath to put the pin in to hold the hose in the mstr cyl... I may have to add a adjustable thread to the push rod to get it the right length more to come...... and yes I took pix...
so.. since I had a rare day off on a wk end and it's not raining , I pulled out the e4od and installed the new sngl mass flywheel and 12" clutch plate.... and the zf 5spd too!! I will have to trim back the trans cutout to clear the shift tower , and the stock crossmember and e4od rear trans mount bolt right up to the ZF ,,But the frame jogs up just where it moves forward to , and the rear of the trans is taller , so there will be some trimming or something cause the lower crossmember bolt holes are under the bottom frame rail...... more to come ....
I'm jealous. Our van is the only vehicle we own (total = 8) that has an automatic. And only because there is no manual trans available. And I guess I'm too lazy to try what you did.
Congratulations moosiah!
Mike

That's rare? A factory 3.54 LS? Not sure if my van has a Dana 60, but according to the axle code chart, it's a LS 3.54 on my two 1990's.
I didn't realize that there was an option for a tach for the old body style vans.

must be , I've been looking for one for 5 yrs in the 8 p & p yards around here , and this was the first one I've ever seen ... I check all the vans every time I go ... Tach : it's stock frm a f250 w a 6.9. there is no place to put one any where stock, so I'm making a housing for it to sit on the dash.... the inputs are labeled on the back so: 2 grounds ,1 12v+ and 1 signal in ..... and I have a stock d60 and 2 e4ods for sale now ..
well crap ..... called 3 drive line shop today and no one wants to make me a drive shaft.. they want me to hang a bracket and do a two piece drive line ....... one guy said he 'might try it ' but no guarantees .. see, it will need to be 78 1/2 " long , and thats bad juju ...... maybe I'll have to haunt the yards again for a f350 ... hummmmmmm

78", yeah thats way too long...
For a crossmember, you could try using a transmission crossmember from a 92+ Econoline
Then fabricating a bracket that fits it to get the proper height for the carrier bearing.
These bolt to the side of the frame.
I have seen a few of the 75-91s with 2 piece rear driveshafts.
