E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Just had the BD Power X monitor installed. Took it out of the A pillar mount and put it in a radio shack black project box. Bought a radar detector suction cup set up, double sided tape, and now I have my gages right next to the rear view mirror with my jammer and radar detector. I drove a truck with the pods and did not like it. Too many places to look to see what is going on and I did not like the blind spot. Anyway I am now very curious about readouts. We susppect faulty Pyro temps of reading 100°F low. FPS is working with BD on this.Take the van for a run, pull in the parking lot and it is already down to 300 and 15secs later down to 235. This is pre turbo and shot the exhaust manifold with an infrared detector and showed 300F. Trans around town runs 140-150 boost the best I saw was 12.9. Cruising at 75 MPH Towing a 24 Ft trailer loaded with I guess 2500-3000lbs/no trailer = Trans 175-185°F / 145-155 Pyro Max 1160F / 900F Boost 15.9 / 10.0 I will get some pics on my registry in the next week or so. I would appreriate your readings, Thanks in advance.

Hey Larry M and Roaddog. How about some Pyro/Trans/Turbo typical readings for around town and highway cruising? I want to see how I compare before I go with a Superchip Tuner to 60HP. Thanks!!

HERE are some fairly accurate mesaurements I did on EGT's. The quick drop to 235 does seem a little low unless temps are in the under 32 range especially if the engine was well warmed up.
As far as stock boost the max should be in the 15 to 17 range.
Tranny temps are very ambient sensitive and at times can be hard to judge. Typical tranny temps when using a sensor in the driver's side pressure port run around 60 to 90 above ambient and if it's very cold out takes a Loooooooong time to come up to that temp like 25 to 40 miles of driving when it's in the 20's. When the temps are 40 or below mine now has a hard time reach 110 unloaded but that is with Mobil 1 which I think dropped my overall temps by about 10 deg. If ambients are in the 60-80's I saw temps trying to stabilize out in the 130 to 150 range and that was with dyno ATF - I changed to Mobil 1 this winter so don't have any summer comparisions yet. Towing around 16K GCW last summer with dyno ATF the tranny temps on the flats hovering in the 150 to 160 range. The highest tranny temp I've ever seen was towing running the snot out of the engine pulling the grades on I-68 over the Cumberland Mtn. in 90 deg weather and approach the 180/185 range at which time my engine cooling fan can on and dropped them about 10 deg. I've made this run on I-68 both ways twice since we go to Chicago each year to visit relatives over the summer. One other caveat is that I think the X-mointor uses the PCM input as it's sensor and all I can tell you is that I have done several checks with my AutoTap which can read what the PCM sees as the tranny temp and that runs 15 to 20 deg higher than what I see on my gauge. I think this delta is because the PCM sensor in up in the "guts" of the tranny in the solenoid body whereas the sensor in the pressure port might be effected somewhat by being attached to the trans housing and only is seeing the temp for the fluid near the outer housing so a 15 or 20 deg delta between those two locations seems IMO reasonable.
Hope that helps some,
Larry
