E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.

The 7.3 cooler is smaller than the 6.0 cooler. More important, it has a fatal design flaw. Fatal to your tranny, that is. Both the inlet and outlet are on top. In plumbing, this would be called a trap.....and that's exactly what it is.
As clutch material wears off, it winds up settling in the bottom of the cooler because it can't make it back up to the outlet. So it sits there and accumulates until it clogs the cooler. Once the cooler is clogged (and you would be surprised how little it takes to do that), coolant is routed through the bypass tube on the side of the tranny. This causes the tranny to run hot which causes the clutch material to wear off even faster....which causes the bypass tube to clog up too. Then the tranny overheats and you're out $3500.
The six liter cooler has it's outlet on the bottom, like all well designed coolers. No trap created, and clutch material drains out with the old coolant when you flush.

so i have some "fun money" for my van and am looking for the next upgrade.
i have a dp tuner and 4 inch turbo back exhaust ...
what do u guys think is the next best upgrade for HP and MPG ???
fuel pump, methanol injection, injectors ????
thx
Figuring some way to open up the intake was the best thing I did. Though the mods you are describing probably would still give you some benifit without.
I wouldn't ad an aftermarket fuel pump but a regulated return system would probably be a good idea if you are going to get different injectors. The Ford 7.3 tends to starve the last injector in line as it is a dead head system. The more fuel you call for from programming and the more thirsty your injectors get the worse this problem is. If you need more fuel supply which you probably wouldn't Stage 2 200% nozzel and below just ad a second stock fuel pump. I finally replaced my fuel pump at 170,000 miles purely being preventative.
You already have DP programming so I don't know if you would get anything out of a hotter IDM?
I have been out of diesel mode for a bit so I'm not sure who is making the best injectors right now. Seems it is the same as before. Bean's and Hypermax. I can say I have been happy with the single shots. You will have to reburn your chip though.

BTS tranny at 33K miles and still under warranty over 5 years ago and haven't looked back or worried about the real weak link in this great 7.3L engine drivetrain.
Next was full gauges (tranny, pre turbo, post turbo, and water temp ... tubo and air filter and pre pump restriction gauges.) along with my TCC lock up indicator light and idiot turn signal indicator both mounted in my A-pillar.
I would love a DP tuner mod, but my ancient 1700 SMCT gives me all the power I need and just can't pull the tigger on about $800 because I would want a multiple program chip and replacement PCM.

ignore what I wrote before. I'd have to second Larry's vote for BTS. I've tried to kill it. I keep throwing money at its demise but the tranny just keeps going. It was the single most expensive mod though.
