NEW ON DIESEL COMMUNITY. I HAVE A BIG OIL LEAK BETWEEN TRANSMISSION AND MOTOR. I THINK IT'S THE REAR MAIN SEAL. I PLAN TO REPLACE IT MYSELF. DO I NEED TO USE ANY SPECIAL TOOL TO REMOVE OR INSTALL THE NEW SEAL? ANY SUGGESTIONS?

May not be a main seal.
I would check the top rear of the motor first. Any oil or fuel in the valley of the block can drain into the bell housing. Link has photo of rear of block. You can see the hole the fluids would come thru. The one with the last 9 in 1999.

Madvan, good link! Thanks!
Vocho, I had a fuel leak from filter drain "O"rings run down & drip where you are describing. From what I'v read on this site, rear main oil seal leaks are uncommon. Has anyone else seen or had problems here? Which is a little comforting, This was one of my main concerns when buying a high miler van. (tired of oil slick in my driveway form past clunkers)
I had a rear main leak and pan gasket leak at around 18k, fixed under warranty (luckily) and seemed to take care of it. I now have another leak in that area (at 60k) , but not bad. Not sure what it is...

THANKS YOU GUYS FOR THE FEEDBACK, THE VAN LEAKS A LOT OF OIL BUT THE SIDES OF THE VALLEY DON'T SHOW THE STREAM OF THE LEAK, WHEN THE VAN IS DRIVEN, WHEN I PARK IT, IT'S WHEN IT LEAKS MORE. I HAVE 263,000 MILES
Rear of motor leaks.
1-Any oil/fuel in the valley (rear) will drain thru the hole and dump out the back of the block (passenger side as photo shows) it will drain in front of the flex plate. (oil/fuel/coolant)
2- Backing plate on rear of block.(oil)
3- rear main seal. (oil)
4- Pump seal in trans/over heat trans. (trans fluid)
