E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I have a 2004 E350 with rear discs. Last May the rear calipers froze up within a week of each other so I had to replace both of them. I thought it was strange that they would go bad right at the same time, but the replacement calipers solved the problem so I didn't think about it again. Just today the left rear stuck again, so I 'm in the middle of replacing it and returning the old one as defective since it's only been on there a year. A mechanic told me it may be a collapsed hose, or the proportioning valve. Where is this valve and how common is it for them to fail? Is there any way to test it? I will be replacing the caliper and hose today, and I'm hoping I just got a bum reman caliper and that will fix it. Any suggestions would be great. thanks.

If there is a restriction in the line going to the caliper, simply opening the bleed screw to release the hydraulic pressure would release the caliper.
You should confirm that the caliper itself was defective from the factory before exchanging it. Warantees are meant to guarantee a product against defects, not to aid in no-charge parts swaps.

But what does that tell me? As soon as I tighten the bleed screw and drive, it will re-pressurize and stick again......

It probably means the rubber brake hose needs to be replaced. It is not releasing the pressure.

[/ QUOTE ] If you attempt to compress the caliper with the bleed screw loose, you can tell if it is stuck.
hey carr ,i have had similer problems on my 1999 e350 psd and my 2001 winstar my problem was caused by the vent in master cylinder cap not working properly, to test drive your van when brakes are cold with cap of master if it still sticks this is not your problem , if the sticking goes away and the brake does not get way hotter than the other brakes the vent is not working. if you look inside your cap on the master it has a rubber gasket in the center of the rubber is a slit that looks like a - sign it is so small you almost need a bright light and a magnifying glass to see it , take a razor knife and open up the - sign and then make a cross slice turning it into a + sign , this is called re-venting the cap,Wade
if the vent is not working it will cause presuure to build up and lock up the calipers my e350 both rears locked , my windstar front left and made abs and brake light come on
