Coolant additive

How are you introducing the additive into the cooling system ? The only easy way I see is to pour it into the expansion tank. Is this acceptable ?

Re: Coolant additive

I'm assuming your van has a pressurized "expansion tank" and no cap on the radiator. I'm not familiar with the cooling system setup on the PowerStroke so I will throw out some hypotheticals. If the tank has two heater hosed sized lines, then it is a flow through tank and there are no worries.

If there is only one line going to it, it is a true expansion tank and you will need to get the fluid from the tank to go into the engine. The way you do that is to CAREFULLY open the cap with the engine hot (wear leather gloves). This will de-pressurize the system, and cause extra coolant to flow from the engine to the tank. Then as the coolant cools and contracts, it will pull the extra fluid back into the engine, along with the SCA.

Another (probably more effective) option is to put the SCA into the tank, then drain coolant from the radiator petcock into a clean container, until all the coolant has flowed from the tank into the engine. Then re-fill the tank with the drained coolant.

Yep. If you plan on testing it again after adding, you may want to drive around for a while to circulate it.
