Could be bad....

hey guys,
Hoping this is obvious to someone. Hours away from making a cross country trip in my 99 e350. 180000 miles on it. Just starts spewing smoke (looks white, tough to tell in the dark) and oil pressure drops and oil light kicks on. It starts fine, but runs very rough, feeling like it's only running 7 cylinders. It drives ok, but still had it towed over to a dealer (ugh).

Are we talking an injector, rings, hpop, all of the above? Any advice would be great so I don't get hosed too bad at the dealer.

Also, I'm about 6000 miles since last oil change and my last Blackstone report, 6000 miles ago, came back great.

Thanks guys.

Andy

So according to ford, low oil pressure was a result of a failed sending unit. Fixed that.

The idm is bad, and the #2 and #6 injectors aren't firing properly. They won't know If they are definitely bad until the replace the idm and test injectors. I'm praying it's just the module. Would a failed module produce the smoke and rough idle that I experienced if the injectors are still good?

That would explain the smoke ie: unburned fuel is white smoke I believe. Your Under Valve Cover harnesses should be checked along with the exterior connectors. Hopefully like you say it is only a baked IDM.

If you haven't already, feel free to order an IDM from another supplier other than Ford. IDM's are usually $900-1100 from Ford in the US and up to $2000 up here in Canada! Ford doesn't even make them anymore, and if you order a good one it'll have a 1 yr/unlimited mile warranty. I just threw a second replacement in my van last week under warranty.

When your module is gone it'll run really rough (if at all) and it might stall occasionally. The injectors won't be firing properly at all without it.

Get them to check out the wiring and all that like blageurt said. I had the IDM I replaced last summer go on me a little over a month ago on tour in California and when I replaced it with another last week it only made 900~ miles down to LA and back to where I left it before it started really acting up. Had to abandon the van on the side of the road for good...

Definitely forget ford for an idm. Call swamps and get a modified one and use yours as a core.

Too late guys, the damage is done to the tune of $2600 for a new idm and 2 injectors. It hurts bad cause this is a job I could do at home, but I'm 3000 miles from home with no other options, plus they got me for a $500 diagnostic fee when I towed it in, so I couldn't just take it and do the job myself. Insult to Injury, it won't be ready until Monday! I needed to be home Monday. Awesome!

Owning a fleet of three, soon to be four, of these, it was a job I expected to have to deal with sooner or later. Could the idm failing have caused the injectors to go bad? This van just crossed the country three times without one issue, so had no reason to suspect I had any problems. Should I think about replacing the other six when I get home?

I severely doubt the injectors were bad. They rarely go bad. They have no service life which means theoretically they can last forever. You should demand your injectors back from the ddealer and get them checked by a reputable diesel shop that specializes in rebuilding injectors. For the money you spent you could have installed Stage 1's with a Modded IDM. They really took advantage of you. Try and get your injectors from them and get them checked. Maybe you can get some money back somehow . Good Luck

Yeah, $500 to be rolled into the final price, but it would cost me $500 to drive away right then. So basically an insurance policy to keep me from getting a diagnosis and then replacing the IDM myself in their parking lot in 20 mins.
Oh well. Tryingto make the most of unfortunate situation.

Here's the latest,
So we showed up yesterday to move things along and get on the road. Apparently while putting the injectors in the tech discovered a damaged push rod. He was going to replace it no charge while he was in there..... while he was having trouble getting the new push rod to seat correctly, he discovered that a lifter was "missing". He couldn't tell with just a flashlight and a mirror, so now we're told the engine needs to be pulled, the oil pan needs to be dropped, and they have to find that missing lifter. So now we're at $6,000 barring any unforseen additional damage. I'm laughing my a$$ off at this point, cause now its just a joke.

The service writer says the "good news" is you may not need one of the injectors, so we can save you $500 right there! yay.

*****So..... now I'm thinking this is all a result of a misdiagnosis. They can't run a full injector diagnostic without the engine being put back together, and a broken #4 push rod on the intake side would probably explain the excessive smoke and rough idle that brought it in in the first place, no?

They said they could "help us out" a little and get the price down to $4500. Thanks, so you were admitting you were screwing me with an extra $1500 in labor? At this point, we're gonna negotiate a price for the work already done and ship the van home. I can't risk paying $4k and still need a new cam shaft or some other stupid expensive part. I'd rather get it home undriveable for the same money, finish the work myself, and maybe I could part it out or sell the van salvage to make up for my losses if it's too expensive to rebuild.

In the end, this is probably my own fault for towing it to huntington beach ford! I should have just taken it to a ferrari dealership instead! haha.

-Andy

That's real rough Andy.

I'm pretty sure Corning Ford up in Corning, CA only charged me a $136 diagnostic fee to tell me my IDM and exhaust back pressure sensor was bad.

California hasn't been good to us musicians and our PSDs lately. Best of luck to you in the future.

And try to pass up a nice rig or two for any other potential buyers...

My ford dealer does the test for free, then if it needs work they charge for the job.
