Dirty air... how bad? Any hope?

I have a 03 e450 that I bought last year. Long story short, the air filter assembly is broken in a way that air could easily bypass the filters. I have no way of knowing how long this was the case.

Is there anything I can do to mitigate potential problems caused by this?

Thanks for any help, very nervous about this...

Any damage has already been done and it's no use to worry excessively about it. I would just continue to operate the vehicle and see if the engine continues to run OK.

Of course, I'd immediately put a good air cleaner on. Be sure you clean all the hoses between the air cleaner and the turbo.

While you're cleaning the intake hoses, check for damage to the turbo wheel. If the leading edges are damaged, it indicates the dirty air was at work. Other damage can include damaged rings which can result in burning oil and low compression. Dirt can also get into the crankcase and damage bearings, etc., but without an engine tear-down, you won't know.
