E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I'm looking for the proper procedures and tourqe specs for servicing front wheel bearings on my 2003 E350 (2wd). I've searched the site and found specs for F series, but i don't know if they are the same. If you have service manuals and would be willing to post this information for me, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks.

Morning Van:
It's VERY interesting your request for this info. came at this time, As I am about to do this exact same thing Monday myself.
I make the assumption you have or know how to remove the break calliper and repack the bearing themself and have done so.
Here is the Info. you requested directly from the FORD Disk.
1. Install the outer front wheel bearing and the front wheel outer bearing retainer washer.
2. Install the spindle nut
3. NOTE: The break disc and hub should be rotated while adjusting front wheel bearing end play ....
4. Tighten the spindle nut to 40Nm (30 lb/ft)
5. Loosen the spindle nut two turns
6. Tighten the spindle nut while rotating the break disc counterclockwise to 23-34 Nm (17-24 lb/ft)
7. Loosen the spindel nut 1/2 turn
8. Tighten the spindle nut to 2 Nm (17 lb/in)
9. Loosen the spindle nut to the FIRST avalable hole in the spindle and install new catter pin, and dust cover.
10. Reinstall the front disc brake caliper anchor plate.
Instruction 1 ~ 9 are direct quotes from my CD manuel.
I would point out that in step #8 you tighten the nut to "INCH POUNDS" NOT FT/LB.
Hope this get's off on the right foot....Good Luck

Thanks, yes, I should be OK with the other procedures - i've done disc brakes before, just not on the van. But, that does bring a question to mind - does the service manual mention any special tools required? A Ford Escort I had in the past needed a special tool to remove the calipers.

I usually just snug the spindle down while rotating the wheel and then back it off about a half turn and then snug it down again while spinning........17 inch pounds is not much more than hand tight. Then I back off 1/4 turn and find a hole in the locking cover.
You will probably be able to detect a tiny bit of end play if you grab the wheel and try to move it in and out. Not much, mind you, but a tiny tiny bit.
That's the way tapered roller bearings work and I have been adjusting them this way for 25 years.
Keeping the bearings greased is the best thing that you can do to prolong their service. My van has 100K and I cannot detect any bearing wear. The neat thing about tapered bearings is that you can compensate for wear.
Morning Gent:
I gave "Vangentr" the information he requested directly from the FORD Service directive.
If he choses to use a different method that's his business.
However, I would suggest he use the method layed out by FORD if he has had NO experience in the area of repacking wheel bearings.

If your looking for a Torque wrench that reads in inch/pounds I would suggest you look at "Harbor Fright" web-site.
I got one at there outlet store in Tucson, price was about $15.00 as I remember.
That in/lb wrench realy came in handy when I put my Sonnax vaulve and Triculmulator springs in the Trans.
Well worth the price to have on hand.
