E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
On my e350 powerstroke with dp tuner i am wondering about a ting. when i hold steady speed max pedal it will not downshift just starts to accelerate, it would have been better for it to dovn shift to get more power.
if i am going from still and max pedal it feals like it change gears way to early. could have hold the gears much longer to get more power.
feals like it is changing gear way to early sp when next gear come i loss alot of power. have no idea of the rpm, but sometimes it will hold the gears for longer then the truck is much faster..
any ideas what can make the tranny to shift way to early. have not ovned this car for long so dont know if this is correct or not.
A couple things that might be helpful. A Power Stroke Diesel generates a lot of torque. So, it doesn't need lots of RPM's like a gas engine to really get the mass of your van moving. Additionally, it doesn't have a high "redline". A gas engine will rev out further.
Another thing, and this is a Ford issue, is that the jump between the Drive gear (D) and the Overdrive gear is pretty big. 1.0 to .71. That might be that "loss of power". Additionally, the E40D's and the 4R100's kind of slide really slowly from that third to fourth (overdrive) gear. Usually, that change comes at around 47MPH or so on the PSD vehicles I have had.
That give you some ideas and some direction for more questions?

That is because the PCM senses the load in the Van and adjusts the shift strategy accordingly. When I load my puta up heavy ( over 3000 lbs ) it runs like the big lincoln's used to . . .

How did the van drive before you had the tuner installed?

My van is very hesitant to downshift when I run the 80e program as well. I figured it was one of the ways Jody used to boost fuel economy. I kind of like it as it gets me a little closer to manual transmission-type control. I find if you drop it out of O/D, it downshifts readily.

My 60t tune downshifts much like stock.
I get that too with that setting. Wants to shift up right away too... So when you go to change lanes and pass, you end up blowing a lot of smoke until the thing finally drops down - something to be aware of if you don't want to attract attention to yourself. I use the 40T otherwise, and it shifts fine and hardly smokes.

have not tested all settings on the tuner, only with stock, 80e and 100performance, i get more power on 80e so i usual use this or stock, it shifts smother on stock so if i am only driving in the small streets around here i use stock, but if i wot it will just gear up and then smoke alot and use long time to get speed. i think it would have been faster if it had used the gears better.
on 80e if i dont press max throttle just half way then it will run better thru the gears i think..
starting to get used to how it acts so it aint a big problem
