E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Seeing as it is getting cold out, I was wondering if I should be putting any fuel additives in the tank? Or in the oil? What do all of the experts do? Any info would be appreciated. Also, at what temperature or driving habits should I be plugging the truck in?
Bob

Cold operation isn't a concern for me, but for starters Powerservice Diesel Kleen in the white jug is for anti-gelling of the fuel. Typically available and easy to get at China Mart.
Other folks have posted they switch to a 5w-40 Synthetic (Rotella or pick your brand of diesel oil)for easier starts in winter and then switch back to 15w-40 Dino Rotella in summer. If you have the money to spend you can run the Synthetic all year.
Can't answer the when to plug in question, but I'm sure someone here will.

I'm on Long Island. I've never pulgged my 6.0 in, and never had a problem starting it. I plug the 7.3 in below 20 degrees, just because I want it to make heat some time before I get to the expressway.
My 1985 Mercedes 300D is a different story, but it has 285,000 miles on it......
In either case, I'm much more likely to use an oil pan heater than the stock block heater, although on a REALLY cold day, I might use both.

Trick is lighter weight oil.
On the fuel additive. Its just good maintenance to use. The fuel is a winter blend. But never know when you will get a bad load.
Since ULSD i run a home blend of Kero/2 stroke mix as an additive. Would like to get Bio for the lube but on LI its a PITA and expensive to get you hands on it. The KERO was high sulfur. As time goes by it now is ULSK.
I was a north east region AMA LRRS road racer, and also did some battle of the twins AHRMA stuff. Raced at Bridgehampton, Louden, Mid Ohio, VIR, Daytona, Pocono, etc. Got a little track time at Lime Rock and Watkins Glen, too. Been retired for ten years.

2% mix is all you need.
It will lube and clean the fuel system.
To high of a mix will hurt MPG (lowers BTU).
Also the bio will gell at a higher amb temp.
Diesel Kleen should be fine. White Jug for winter. Follow the label. I wouldn't experiment with any blending until your warranty is done with 5 yr 100k, don't give any excuse to deny coverage.
thank you bill,
ddog, i am way out of warrantee

I was responding to the OP, He has an '05 with a 6.0. Depending on the miles he probably has some warranty left. If I had a good runing 6.0, I don't think I'd experiment with it

Come on, you consider bio/kero or 2stroke additives an experiment
I can maybe understand the 2stroke.
My father started using 2 stroke additive last week and suggested I do. He is using the Walmart brand and adds about 8 oz. to a tank. He has a 2005 F250. This is what everyone is talking about, right?

I stopped using additives a while back. When I was using them......Powerservice Diesel Kleen was what I used (just follow the directions on bottle, as stated in a previous reply).
As far as plugging it in........I plug in at about 35*F. Only reason I do this is because last year I had a glow plug issue (ie......they stopped working ) and had to plug it in for a while just to get it started (Luckily I thought they might be going out, so I got up early enough to plug it in just in case (made for a good test anyway)). Went ahead and plugged it in the rest of the cold season before I had a chance to find out what was going on with the plugs (came back to a fault in the PCM of all things!!!). Does it NEED to be plugged in at 35*???? NO! But.......sure does make it nice and cozy in the van real quick.

I'm using an anti gel additive that also adds lubricity. Reading too much that the low sulpher diesel's lubrication is much lower than what engine manufacturers recommend. B2 is an easy way to achieve it though. I seem to run into B2 in Iowa and Illinois, but not around home in Wisconsin. Don't travel much during the winter months with the bus.
