E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Okay, I tried looking for the old posts that talked of fuel economy, but no luck.
My 1990 7.3L IDI, E4OD & 3.54 axle just recently got a bit over 17 MPG. This was running at 60-65MPH (and it was evening/night on the return trip). Sometimes a tad faster, but never going past 70 MPH. A/C was on MAX. This was on a 'highway' type road, but not freeway.
Usually, if I get on it and hold 70-75, it gets the high 14's or low 15's. Local driving (town/country- 40/60 mix) it gets 15ish MPG.
I guess I'm doing fairly well, considering the age of the thing... oh, it's a 15 passenger van, all the seats are there.
So, how's everyone's else van doing?

It sounds like you're right in line. My 2000 gets about 14-17 mpg in town and 17-21 highway unless it's cold weather. In really cold weather I'll lose one or two mpg and have gotten as bad as 10mpg in town.
My 1994 IDI w/a 4.09 rear axle used to get 16 mpg (albeit with a much higher average speed). It had an aftermarket turbo; I'd say you are in the ballpark.
My curba is about 16 Stop and Go and 18-20 Hwy . That is with 600 lbs tools inside and 4 Professional ladders , on the Racks at 65- 80 mph on Hwy. I have the 3:55 ratio. When I install my DP flashed 60 Tow TDEO PCM I should get more city economy Jody said. But we'ell see. 86'ing the cat and Injector O-ring replacement did alot. I also changed MAP sensor and Upgraded the Turbo Intake from the Orange Crap to a Solid Black stiff one. I run Motorcraft 1618 filters. I also use Diesel Cleen in the grey bottle.

Just did a 1200+ mile road trip with the band over the long weekend. Had the rear seat removed and absolutely loaded to the brim with all our equipment, along with six of us riding inside. The van handled the trip quite well and hauled from the west coast over the mighty Canadian Rockies with ease.
I wasn't sure if I was ever going to see 20 mpg in the van due to the low numbers here in gridlock city, but it got over 20 mpg on the way out there. I'm loving it!

Just got back from 3000 trip towing 5500 lb. camper averaging 11.8 mpg. Normally I get just under 15 with normal driving. I got as high as 18 mpg on a highway trip with no weight in van. I believe I have 4.10 rear. I was expecting diesel to be $6/gal. for the trip but it went down just at the right time.

1200 mile trip - Van fully loaded with race bikes and gear @ 70-75mph I averaged 22mpg.... Just got back from a 1800 mile trip - Van was empty - @ 60-65mph I averaged 24.3 mpg.... One fill up was in the high 25's......
A 1000 mile trip with my 14ft enlcosed trailer filled with race bikes and stuff I got an average of 14mpg @ 70-75mph.......
Around here in Wisconsin - mainly county roads I average 20mpg..... Right now I have a DP Tuner - I find that the tow mode yields more mileage.... I run Tech 2 cycle oil and Diesel Kleen.... Other then that the van is stock.....

That's amazing mileage, all around. What year is your van?

The van is an 03 - I picked it up about a month and a half ago with 41K on the clock..... Since then I have put almost 6K on it....
I drove from southern Wisconsin to New Jersey last weekend - and was getting between 23-25mpg... My buddies didn't believe me until I showed them how I fill the van and how I do my calculations.....
First I will add my 2 cycle oil and Diesel Kleen Mixture - Based on what my average mileage has been - In addition I take into account what the gauge says....
Then I will set the pump nozzle into the filler neck - Putting the nozzle on the lowest setting - When the pump shuts off I can get another 7Gal into the tank if I go nice and easy.... It has taken me up to 30min because of foaming - But I want to be as consistant as I can... I always fill the tank to the BRIM - I mean to the point where I can see the fuel at the top of the filler neck and it's not settling anymore......
I have been used to driving like an old Grandma because of the truck I previously had - So for me to stay between 60-65mph isn't a problem....

7.3 with a 3.55 - So far I am really pleased with the whole rig...... Gonna do the Evans coolant change - 203degree Tstat - Some other stuff - Gonna put an air dam on the front of the van to try to get better MPG.......
Good Morning Gent's.
Just back from a 2925 mile trip, I'll keep this simple.
I got 20.26 mpg which included 543 mi of stop & go City driving over 13 days.
I had head winds going and comming, plus a great deal of rain.
I held to 66 mph (1930 rpm) on the out-bound leg.
And 65 mph (1850 rpm) on return leg.
Although this is not bad millage, It is not what I hope for, I was looking for somthing in the 24 mpg range.
I think this lack of millage is due to the "High Power" setting I put in the PMC via my SuperChip programer which the folks at SuperChip said was the setting to use to get best MPG readings.
When next I hit the road I shall go back to one of the lower settings and see what happens.
Questions?? bring them on.

Drove 405 miles in 2 days and burned 26.2gallons of diesel so looks like my van pulled out 15.5 mpg. I was cruising 60 to 70 mph with the occasional 75mph.
