Re: fuel filter

Hi Pete:

Did you check the archives?

I had mine changed recently and I watched. It was not too difficult. The mechanic pulled the water drain hose off the bottom part attached to the filter. With a rag under the filter, he unscrewed the filter from the top housing. Once out of the van, he unscrewed the bottom part. Next he screwed the bottom unit onto the new filter. Clean fuel was poured into the top of the filter and the filter was then screwed back into the filter unit above the engine. The hose was reattached. My van is a '91. If you don't put fuel oil in the new filter before installing it, the engine starts, stalls and has to be cranked for ever to re start.

If you have a new van with the electric fuel pump, this prefilling is not necessary. Just don't tighten the filter too much. turn on the key and watch to see when the filter is full and overflows. Quick like a bunny, turn off the key. Now tighten the filter. How tight? Like an oil filter tight. Start the engine and watch for leaks.

Good luck.

Jamie
