E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Has anybody changed one of these on a van? I have a 1996 Powerstroke E-350. I can't get to the bolts which secure the filter housing to the engine. Tried to take the turbo compressor manifold off to give myself some room and I can't budge that either. I found a thread which describes how to do the repair on a pick-up and it looks so simple. I'm leaking fuel out of the valley and I hope this small fix will do the trick. Thanks for the help. Dylan
Assumiing you have already removed doghouse completely , along with the intake hose /resonator and Turbo "Y' intake. Cover the intake boots with rags or duct tape so nothing fall inside. Disconnect the IPR connector from the IPR and from the housing. I had to loosen the Trans dipstic tube as well . There might be a hose connected from the drain in the front too., Work from the Passenger side and use a small mirror to see the two 13 mm bolts which the bowl is mounted with. Don't forget to disconnect the two rubber return lines from the heads to the FPR. The bowl assembly comes out from the passenger side. If you can remove the passenger seat it's easier. Hope this helps. I had more room because I removed my Turbo to rebuild it. If your Turbo needs attention now is the time . . . When you get it out make sure to clean the FPR screen and change all your o-rings. Also shim the FPR if you want higher fuel pressure . . . lot easier when it's out. Don't replace all those hoses and clamps too . Make sure the clamps are tight without stripping them . Or buy the good sleeve type clamps thats what I did . Good luck

removing the turbo would make the job a lot easier...it's not that much labor to do it...good preventive maintance anyway...just 2 o-rings need to be replaced...would give you a whole lot more room to get both arms in around your work...
Anybody need a complete filter assy PM me ...I have an extra
thanks guys, that's some good information. i guess i'll go ahead and remove the turbo. sounds like that will help on a couple of counts. are the o-rings available at a regular parts store or do folks get them online?
I went to an O-ring place and got ALL the O-rings in Quadruples for less than 10 bucks.
Fords want 5 bucks for 2 for the Turbo alone. There are also some clowns trying to sell Kits for the drain for 15 bucks . The O-rins cost like 2 cents . . . Find an O-ring place and bring the o-rings with you so they can be matched. I brought the complete filterbowl with everything loose so the guy could match everything . Make sure you get the right type for the application ie: Viton for oil like Turbo O-rings and the others for Diesel. Any place that services Hydraulic lines /equipment should have these O-rings. Tell them what they are being used for and thats it.
