Fuel leak , SES light,, code reader, chip & rough running ? HELP

Greetings,

This forum has been a great help to me. I keep my Ford vans 13 to 14 years and my 2001 E-350 PSD Van that I purchased two years ago is my first "fly by wire" vehicle.

I had notice the "fuel smell" now and then and from reading here I decided to investigate the problem. I was not able to find the source of the leak without tearing it down. With the experience I gained, now I know where to look to find the leak. I did go in blind and followed the many posts here and fixed the problem for $5. I replaced O rings on the fuel filter housing where the water drain attaches. I have not smelled the fuel smell since.... GOOD.

It is a very, I repeat very labor intensive job to replace the two O rings, I went in thru the the inside of the van, so as not to disconnect anything more than I had to... and the have to find special parts to properly re-assemble. I removed the passenger seat, it takes one of the new #55 torx bits, which means that the ones you can buy at say "harbor freight" for $10 a set, will not fit properly. (I always buy Craftsman tools, unless it is something I know I will not use often, then I go cheap) The patent is still good on the new torx bits, the tool vendors get about $30 for the right one and sears gets over $100 for the set... new torx can be put in by machine and old one has a 15 degree offset in case you are wondering. So I removed the seat torx bolts slowly, with the wrong #55 torx, only two, back to are regular bolts.

As for the O rings, I took the size given in the posts, double check me, but I remember them being 1/2" X 1/8", found a hydraulic parts supply house and being a "new customer", He offered me his last 5 for $5... he never looked them up... oh well, got them.

I also got this small flexable screwdriver set at "Harbor Freight"...
Worth it's weight in gold on this job, well almost.... 'grin'.

So, I get the it all back together and no leak, no smell, nothing I can see as a leak... great.... then I took it for a ride and the SEC light comes on... Service Engine Soon.... and now and the rough idle or rough running or both, comes and goes, very intermittent.

So, at my earliest opportunity I borrowed my friends "Actron CP9145 Code Reader/Scanner"

I had planned to buy one but wanted to make sure I bought the right one.... The above listed Actron does not read the codes and says n/a on all but one test... Worthless on the PSD's.

So last night I found one of the many posts on the AutoEnginuity PC Scan Tool (USB), found several on ebay (don't know if it is right one), AutoEnginuity seems to be selling it, about $50 cheaper on ebay, found another post that refered me to "www.iptdiesel.com" which says
" PC Total Ford Bundle : PC ScanTool (USB) + Enhanced Ford Interface (min. req. for use on a Powerstroke)" for $341.95, which at first glance seems to be a few dollars cheaper than getting one on ebay and the Enhanced Ford software from "AutoEnginuity"

I have been thinking of getting a "economy chip" for the van and please correct me if I am wrong, some of the chips work with a code reader and you buy them both, which means I would not need the AutoEnginuity scan tool.

I had planned on taking my time to find the code reader/scan tool and then research the "economy chips" but I have a long trip scheduled in a month... 5/30/07. and need do concentrate on fixing the SES problem.

I have emailed AutoEnginuity and waiting for a answer. I'd buy one, but then if I have to buy another to use the chip?

So, I'm not sure what to do and time is running out.

In the mean time, is there anyone in the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area of Florida or within reasonable driving distance that would like to "Demo" there code reader/scanner or I'd pay a fair price or help with a project?

Or if you have any input on what you did about a code reader, economy chip or the SEC light, I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks and thanks for everyones help here in this forum.
c'ya,
Tim
