Fuel millage problem?

Good Morning Gent's

I have a question/problem.
Last week I was on a little road trip from Thursday through Sunday.
I took on fuel upon leaving odomiter reading was 65017.
Upon arrivel at my location I took on fuel at the local Flying-J, 21.163 gal., odometer reading 65493. Total milage traveled today is 476 mi.
When I do the math it comes out to 22.4 mpg.
I kept the c.c. set at 65 mph as much as possable.
Comming home Sunday doing everything the same, 65 mph, refueling at the Flying-J, I seem to get 24.551 mpg.
Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, But What Gives??
Any Suggestions??

I would love to see #'s like that!
But i cannot ever see it happening. (my van) (18 open road summer)
I would check the ODO with the mile markers. To see if its out of range.
Test at a few speeds. Could be in cal at 50 and out by 60mph.
You can use a gps or timed 1 minute mile for baseline (60mph) set the CC to get your data.
I lost 1/10 with a tire change to a 33. I travel 1 mile and register 9/10 at 60. I installed a truspeed to recal the speedo/odo

More power to ya if its true!

Bill

Must have been down hill on the way there........and even steeper down hill with a tail wind on the way back.

Don't think the downhill both ways thing can really happen, but the wind factor can and does make a huge difference, especially with a van.

What about the quality of the fuel? Different stations?

I agree with the wind factor!
It most definately can make that much difference in mileage.
Another thing to consider is elevation (seriously). If your starting point is a bit higher than your finish point it could make a little difference on the return trip. Combine that with a small wind hitting your tail on the way out and same wind hitting your face on the return trip.......can most assuredly cause the mileage drop. These vans have a pretty good size to them (ie, pushing a brick wall down the road ) and a little wind can go a loooooong way for (or against) mileage.

I went over the numbers once more yesterday as I had more time to look carefully at them.
They come out the same 22.4 going, & 24.5 on the return leg.
I'm not sure how to calculate for eleavation....Here at home in Cochise County I am at 4658 ft.
Going up to Laughlin, NV. I know I was well over 5k+ getting to the Kingman area.
The wind was all over the place not sure how to calculate for that.
I also changed/cleaned the Air Filters yesterday, They were full of crap at the 5k mark.
Also Blackstone sent there report, I'm good to go for another 3k on the oil.
I am using Rotella-T Syn. and the Fleetguard filter.
This oil has 9500k on it, and still good.

Really has nothing to do with elevation.
1 mile at sea level is 1 mile at 10,000 feet.
The barro will adjust the tune of the motor for elevation.

He's not talking about elevation i.e. air density, he's talking about elevation change - as in going from the top of a hill to the bottom.

Yeppers.............that's what I meant. And yes, driving uphill one way then downhill on the way back can (and will) cause some difference in mileage (at least it does while pulling my trailer).
To tell it a little differently:
1 mile from sea level to 1,000 feet drives a whole lot different than the same mile from 1,000 feet to sea level.

Also even if his speedo is out of whack a little bit............it's all relative. Unless something strange happened on the trip his 65 mph reading on the speedo on the way out should be the same speed at 65 on the way back.

An update to this story.
With the price of Diesel being what it is, I have put the Van in semi retirment.
I picked up a little Ranger as a Daily driver.
However, I did pull my Travel Trailer (22ft) over to Red Mountain, Near Scottsdale two weeks ago.
Pulling my wagon I got 14 mpg in a 15~20 knot wind.
55~60 mph seems to be the right speed for best fuel usage.
I will be hitting the road this summer sure would like to take the Van, But the price of fuel will dictate.

personally I think those are great numbers.

I don't care how many miles I can get out of my van, I just love the power and range I have with it. I have the 35 gallon main tank and the 27 rear Aux TF Tank for a 62 gallon total range. With my 4" magnaflow straight through exhaust I would bet I get close to 20 mpg if I set the cruise at 65.

Diesel is 4.07 a gallon here, last year it was under 3.00.

I think your numbers are about the best you can get.

Don't let a few hundred dollars in fuel stop you from using your van.

My van is like a living room inside, with the overhead TV, dvd etc, and the rear bench/bed and captains. It's so comfortable having all the room. The passanger can get up and go to the back to the living room, we keep a cooler right by the front, and we are spoiled.

I just had my AC Charged-up yesterday and the system takes 4 lbs. of 134A and 13 oz. of pag oil. Now the van is blowing 41 degrees in the front and 43 degrees in the rear.

The van is so much better than being stuck in a car, especially a small car.

I'm with you van 350sd! The convenience and room behind the driver is worth every penny of fuel. I am jealous of you guys boasting 20 mpg. I'm pretty much stock as far as mechanicals and hold at 12 mpg. But with 160 gallons on board I've got a 1900 mile range. Can't drive 1900 miles without needing to stop and stretch the back side. Hi Hi.
Love this site!

Morning All:
An update to the fuel saga.
1. After installing the Dahl fuel filter, I have been using Mexican Diesel exclusivly the past few months, I am paying $2.20 gal. down there.
With no problems what so ever. I would note anyone thinking of installing the Dahl filter use the 5/8 hose not the 3/8, MY VAN seem to like the 5/8...??? not sure why.

2. I ran into a fellow FORD 7.3 driver at Home Depot, during the conversation he mentioned SuperChip had a Mod to there program that he is using.
I contacted SuperChip, Sent my unit back for updating, I got it back two weeks ago, I reset my PCM to the High Preformance setting as recommended by SC, I have yet to do the "Hard Numbers" But there is a noted improvment in fuel usage.
I shall be hitting the road on my summer trip the end of Aug. That will be the acid test.

UNQUOTE

Is your SuperChip the one that plugs in the box? If so, I have the same set up and didn't know they could be enhanced. Do you 'know' what they did to it? Have you had time to do any estimations on fuel economy these past 5 days? What was the charge for the upgrade?
